US military wants to hack foreign game consoles

Jacob Aron, technology reporter

(Image: Nick Veasey/Getty Images)

Thinking of selling your video game console on eBay? Watch out, it could end up in the hands of the US military. The US navy has just contracted a company called Obscure Technologies to buy up second-hand consoles and develop computer forensic tools for extracting data stored on the hard drives.

The contract, published earlier this week, tasks the company with purchasing consoles from outside the US "in a manner that is likely to result in their containing significant and sensitive information from previous users", then providing tools for extracting information along with any data it finds and a report on the methods used. Obscure Technologies apparently has experience in cracking video game hardware, as the company's lead scientist previously reverse-engineered the original Xbox. UK researchers have also hacked consoles to investigate game piracy.

Why is the US military interested in combing through your saved games, though? It could be that the navy is checking Gamerscores to recruit video-game-trained future soldiers, but it's more likely interested in extracting any sensitive information exchanged through the messaging services found in modern consoles.

British tabloid The Sun recently reported that "terrorists" are using games like Call of Duty as "training tools". That's highly unlikely, unless al-Qaida has decided to take up pwning noobs - but it is possible that plotters worried about phone or email taps may have turned to alternative modes of communication.

Nothing says spring equinox like Marimekko

Google celebrates the spring equinox with a colorful doodle based on the floral and fauna designs of Marimekko, a Finnish company renowned for its bold 1960s patterns. ??

Google celebrates the spring equinox ? the ?first day of spring ? with a splash of colors and designs by Marimekko, the Finnish design house.

If you are a fan of "Sex and the City," shop at Crate & Barrel, or remember the 1960 sartorial choices of Jacqueline Kennedy, you will recognize Marimekko's distinctive patterns. ??

Marimekko embrace of bold colors and design began in 1951. It was the middle of the post-World War II reconstruction, and?founders Vilio and Armi Ratia tapped into Finland's longing for a fresh start and brighter colors.

Marimekko products ? the name literally means "Mary?s dress" in Finnish ? ?first gained fame beyond Scandinavia in 1957 when the company was invited to to a fashion exhibition in Milan, Italy. The show was cancelled, but the garments were showcased by Giorgio Armani, then store manager of Rinascente,?a luxury department store in Milan.?

Ratia?s entrepreneur acuteness combined with bold textile designs would transform the company into ??one of the true icons of a very particular era: the idealistic, vibrant days of the 1960s? wrote Ivar Ekman in the New York Times.

With the vision of pioneering Finnish textile designers Maija Isola and Vuokko Nurmesniemi, Marimekko introduced bold fabrics that revolutionized the industry and became synonymous with dynamic women.

Ms. Isola designed the famous Unikko (poppy) print pattern in bold red, pink, and black on white, a pattern still in production.? Nurmesniemi created the red-and-white striped Jokapoika shirt, a landmark product in the company?s history.

Marimekko entered the American market via its exclusive commercial representative, architect Benjamin C. Thompson, who displayed Marimekko products prominently in his Design Research retail stores.? However, it was Jacqueline Kennedy who gave them nationwide fame during the 1960 presidential campaign when she was featured in a Life magazine cover wearing a Marimekko dress. ??

The company?s expansion continued and Crate and Barrel established a lasting business relationship with Marimekko that goes back in 1966.

Marimekko's own catalogue consists of clothing, interior decoration textiles, bags, and other accessories.?

During the 1990s, the company experienced financial woes that brought it one step short of bankruptcy. But under the strong stewardship of Kirsti Paakkanen, Marimekko regained financial footing and its brand momentum.?

In the late 1990s, the company resurged in popularity in the US with the help of the TV series "Sex and the City" when the main character, Carrie Bradshaw (played by Sarah Jessica Parker), repeatedly wore Marimekko clothes.

These days, with the rediscovery of the 1960s and 1970s fashion, Marimekko is again in the spotlight. ??We have realized that hard-edged modernism needs softening, so that it gets a human feel. Marimekko does that very well," said design historian Charlotte Fiell, according to the New York Times.

The Helsinki-headquartered company has 90 stores around the globe.?

Tips To Gain Business Through Email Marketing ? Small Business ...

Business on the net involves making many choices depending on your particular model, marketing and advertising methods such as using Online Stock Profits, Anik Singal or related approaches. That one aspect is among many that you will need to face and either accept and deal with or not.

When marketing through email, make sure you know how you should do it correctly. Make sure you don?t get emails put in junk folders and you have to be sure the recipient actually views the email. What other tricks can you implement to make sure you have effective emails? Keep reading for great email marketing advice!

Don?t add an address to your email subscriber list without their permission. If you send out unsolicited emails, you can be labeled a spammer and get a poor online reputation. You should also know that your email provider can ban you for violating their policy about spam.

Including a sales pitch and call to action in your emails is fine, but you must provide more than that for your reader to feel your email is worth their time. Your messages might serve as informational newsletters containing industry specific knowledge and insight. If you only make a sales effort, you may have unhappy customers that unsubscribe from your emails. So, even though your emails are created to sell product, be sure they include valuable, interesting information to keep readers interested.

The importance of branding your business extends all the way down to your email marketing efforts. Therefore, it is important to invest enough time to create a template that permits you to use your corporate logo, theme colors and custom fonts that you have already used on a website or in ancillary materials. This will cause your readers to instantly recognize your company.

Wish your subscribers a happy birthday if your demographic data includes this information. Create a celebratory email message to be sent on the big day. Show a little extra appreciation of those loyal folks by having a birthday special coupon, or discount promotion. This will generate excitement for your company, as people like to feel special.

Only send marketing emails to people who have requested them. Sending out unwanted marketing emails to individuals who don?t want them will get your email marketing messages marked as spam. This is very bad for business and you may be blocked by certain Internet providers.

Your email marketing campaign must prove to be attention getting. It may take a few attempts to hone your techniques. If some aspect of your campaign isn?t working, change it as soon as possible. Even if your plan is working, continue searching for new strategies online and from other sources.

If your company already has branded their emails, make sure all new emails stay consistent with previous branding. Use your existing color scheme and logo in every message that is sent. When your brand has earned trust and has a good reputation prior to the emails being sent out, these emails will simply take full advantage of the good name that you have.

Always obtain a customer?s permission before you start sending them emails. This could end up getting you on a spam list which will prevent you from reaching customers. This can cause backlash against your profitability in the form of customers opting out of your email lists, and can even result in problems with your web-hosts and internet service providers.

You want your email to be as personal as you possibly can. Consumers feel like they can relate to a business that treats them in a personal nature, this makes them more inclined to purchase items. For instance, if you are aware of the reason a customer signed up to receive your emails in the first place, mention that in your communications with them.

The layout of your email is key to encouraging people to buy your product. You may want to use images, but it is better to avoid them because of spam filters. Your most important information should be displayed in text form. Make sure it is easy for subscribers to click a link to go to your website. You can wow them with images once they are there.

If you want to go ahead with email marketing you should get permission from your customers before you email them, you should do this for every single person on your list. If not, you will be looking at many spam complaints and loss of customers.

You must grab potential customers? attention with your email marketing efforts. Keep trying until you get it right. Do not stick with something that isn?t effective. Even if you discover an area that works, always test new techniques which can be learned online or some other location.

In your emails, give customers an incentive. Give them a little extra encouragement to give you their business. For example, clicking on a link and making a purchase could award them free shopping.

Ask for at least a customer?s first name at the time that they opt-in to your list. That way, you?ll be able to customize your emails so that they individually address each customer to make the experience personal. This personal connection helps recipients feel visible rather than just one of the crowd of people who are receiving a bulk email. This will make them more interested in your emails.

Success in any business is determined by a well thought out and implemented plan of action. Email marketing is a key component of modern marketing. Utilize the advice provided above in order to maximize your value of email marketing and achieve success.

Insurance replaced 2 month old iPad with old, tatty refurb! Help!!!

Hi everyone!

This is my very first post, so I'm a bit nervous!

I have an iPad which I have through a 24 month contrace with vodafone. I pay a ridiculous ?10 per month just for the insurance!
So, my iPad is only 2.5 months old, and the screen got cracked, so I made a claim on my insurance. As I'm disabled, I couldn't get to my (not so) nearest Vodafone store, so they organised for a replacement to be sent out to me, which was very kind of them.

However, when I opened the bag, on the box it says it's a nearly new refurbished iPad, not a new one as I expected. The screen has clearly been replaced as it has no scratches at all, but the back is covered in marks, and the accessories that come with it are also marked. Although my screen got cracked (due to my 4yr old daughter sitting on it ), my iPad is in pristine condition due to it being kept in a wallet style case.

My issue is, the replacement iPad could be 12 months old, so even though certain parts may have been refurbished, there will have been considerable wear on other components. So it could be ten months older than my iPad. I have 22 months left on my contract, so I feel it's highly unfair, and completely unacceptable to replace my 2 month old iPad with something other than a new one.

The man at vodafone has said that I agreed to the terms and conditions, and by law, when I signed for the iPad, I accepted the iPad as a replacement. Firstly, I signed to accept delivery of the iPad, I did not sign to accept it as a replacement.
Secondly, when I phoned vodafone (who I have a phone contract with) to take out the iPad contract, they didn't explain ANY t&c's of the insurance policy, neither did they ask if I accept any T&C's, nor did I get sent out any information regarding the insurance policy!

So, I have told Vodafone that until I get a new iPad sent out, I shall not be returning my damaged one, nor will I be paying the ?25 excess.

Can someone please tell me if I have any rights where this is concerned? I have MS, and I really can't deal with this stress and upset its causing me. Stress causes relapses (which usually result in disease progression) in people with Multiple Sclerosis, so i usuallydo everything i can to avoid situations like this.
