Sleep learning is possible: Associations formed when asleep remained intact when awake

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Is sleep learning possible? A new Weizmann Institute study appearing August 26 in Nature Neuroscience has found that if certain odors are presented after tones during sleep, people will start sniffing when they hear the tones alone -- even when no odor is present -- both during sleep and, later, when awake. In other words, people can learn new information while they sleep, and this can unconsciously modify their waking behavior.

Sleep-learning experiments are notoriously difficult to conduct. For one thing, one must be sure that the subjects are actually asleep and stay that way during the "lessons." The most rigorous trials of verbal sleep learning have failed to show any new knowledge taking root. While more and more research has demonstrated the importance of sleep for learning and memory consolidation, none had managed to show actual learning of new information taking place in an adult brain during sleep.

Prof. Noam Sobel and research student Anat Arzi, together with Sobel's group in the Institute's Neurobiology Department in collaboration with researchers from Loewenstein Hospital and the Academic College of Tel Aviv -- Jaffa, chose to experiment with a type of conditioning that involves exposing subjects to a tone followed by an odor, so that they soon exhibit a similar response to the tone as they would to the odor. The pairing of tones and odors presented several advantages. Neither wakes the sleeper (in fact, certain odors can promote sound sleep), yet the brain processes them and even reacts during slumber. Moreover, the sense of smell holds a unique non-verbal measure that can be observed -- namely sniffing. The researchers found that, in the case of smelling, the sleeping brain acts much as it does when awake: We inhale deeply when we smell a pleasant aroma but stop our inhalation short when assaulted by a bad smell. This variation in sniffing could be recorded whether the subjects were asleep or awake. Finally, this type of conditioning, while it may appear to be quite simple, is associated with some higher brain areas -- including the hippocampus, which is involved in memory formation.

In the experiments, the subjects slept in a special lab while their sleep state was continuously monitored. (Waking up during the conditioning -- even for a moment -- disqualified the results.) As they slept, a tone was played, followed by an odor -- either pleasant or unpleasant. Then another tone was played, followed by an odor at the opposite end of the pleasantness scale. Over the course of the night, the associations were partially reinforced, so that the subject was exposed to just the tones as well. The sleeping volunteers reacted to the tones alone as if the associated odor were still present -- by either sniffing deeply or taking shallow breaths.

The next day, the now awake subjects again heard the tones alone -- with no accompanying odor. Although they had no conscious recollection of listening to them during the night, their breathing patterns told a different story. When exposed to tones that had been paired with pleasant odors, they sniffed deeply, while the second tones -- those associated with bad smells -- provoked short, shallow sniffs.

The team then asked whether this type of learning is tied to a particular phase of sleep. In a second experiment, they divided the sleep cycles into rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM sleep, and then induced the conditioning during only one phase or the other. Surprisingly, they found that the learned response was more pronounced during the REM phase, but the transfer of the association from sleep to waking was evident only when learning took place during the non-REM phase. Sobel and Arzi suggest that during REM sleep we may be more open to influence from the stimuli in our surroundings, but so-called "dream amnesia" -- which makes us forget most of our dreams -- may operate on any conditioning occurring in that stage of sleep. In contrast, non-REM sleep is the phase that is important for memory consolidation, so it might also play a role in this form of sleep-learning.

Although Sobel's lab studies the sense of smell, Arzi intends to continue investigating brain processing in altered states of consciousness such as sleep and coma. "Now that we know that some kind of sleep learning is possible," says Arzi, "we want to find where the limits lie -- what information can be learned during sleep and what information cannot."

Clinton's planned Pacific trip 'sends message to China'

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton is set to make a rare foray to the South Pacific this week, in a move analysts say is aimed at curbing China's growing influence among the region's small island nations.

While Clinton's previous trips to the area have focused on Canberra and Wellington, this time she is expected to visit the Cook Islands, a nation of just 11,000 people whose 15 islands cover an area barely larger than Washington DC.

The reason is to attend a regional summit hosted by the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF), a group consisting mainly of small island states, along with resource-rich Papua New Guinea and the dominant regional powers Australia and New Zealand, both US allies.

The impoverished, strategically unimportant island states dropped off Washington's radar many years ago, former New Zealand diplomat Michael Powles said, as China cultivated diplomatic ties through aid and bilateral agreements.

Powles, a senior fellow at the Centre for Strategic Studies in Wellington, said the presence of Washington's top diplomat at the PIF summit would send a pointed message to Beijing that the US intends to re-engage in the region.

"If you're going to be crude about it, it's almost the Americans saying 'Hey, don't forget about us'," he told AFP.

"The US has suddenly started doing a lot more in the Pacific after quite a long time of doing the absolute minimal amount, whereas over the last few years China has been pretty active."

Forum organisers have prepared for Clinton's visit, although the US State Department has not confirmed her travel plans, in line with normal protocols.

Annmaree O'Keeffe, a Pacific specialist at Australia-based think-tank the Lowy Institute, said Washington's renewed focus on the island states was part of a broader move in US foreign policy towards the Asia-Pacific region.

The policy involves the US boosting diplomatic and military resources in the Asia-Pacific, now recognised by the US as a key driver in the global economy, while its engagement in Iraq and Afghanistan winds down.

However, some aspects, such as US plans to deploy 2,500 Marines to northern Australia and boost its naval presence in the Pacific, have rankled China, which has increased its military spending in recent years.

O'Keeffe said Clinton's expected appearance at the Cook Islands PIF was "a sideshow" in the larger context of Washington's policy shift but represented the US waving the flag in even the remotest areas of the Pacific.

"When you have a summit like this it brings together all the main players in one spot, so it's an important place to be if you're trying to rebuild your knowledge and influence in the region."

The United States has its own Pacific territories in Guam, the Northern Marianas, Hawaii and American Samoa, as well as close ties with Palau, Micronesia and the Marshall Islands.

However, excluding American Samoa, they are all located in the northern or central Pacific, leaving the South Pacific with scant attention from Washington in recent years.

O'Keeffe's Lowy Institute estimated last year that China had pledged more than US$600 million since 2005 in "soft loans" offering long interest-free periods to nations such as Tonga, Samoa and the Cook Islands.

In contrast, she said the major commitment the US currently has in the South Pacific was a recently-announced US$20 million environmental programme.

Powles said while China may be mildly suspicious about US attempts to improve diplomatic ties in the South Pacific, its chief concern would be if Washington pushed the island nations to agree to more military cooperation.

"It's a question of whether the countries are being asked to be part of the Western (US-led) team and if that would involve regular naval visits and Marines coming, as they're starting do do in northern Australia," he said.

"That would concern the Chinese and be likely to strengthen the people in China who feel they've had enough of the West and the US trying to prevent them emerging as a major power -- that could lead to explosive consequences."

I got a chance to call in and have a candid interview with the fierce?Kat Graham! She talks about her experiences in the music industry, being on tour, plus her passions that her fans don't know about. Check out her insights after the jump!

Q: Would your music ever be featured on?The Vampire Diaries?

Kat Graham: I hope not. Unless "Kat Graham" visited?The Vampire Diaries.?I don't think Bonnie can sing my music. Not unless it's scoring music for the actual soundtrack, which I've done in the past. I'm not interested in singing?my?songs other than when I'm myself. Yea [laughs], I would rather not to be honest.

Q: I wanted to talk to you about your experience in the music industry since we all know how harsh the experience can be from the grind of trying to get a record deal, dealing with music execs, people wanting you to fit into a certain box, grueling rehearsals, or having "bad singing" days. How do you keep going? What do you tell yourself and how do you shut out the doubters?

KG: It's so interesting because, you know, I spent everyday since age 14 trying to make my music. There's not one day that goes by that I'm not listening to one of my songs or in rehearsal for one of my songs or dancing to one of my songs. And all I wanted when I was kid was to have a record deal. I wanted to be the first female, young teenager producer and It didn't happen. And when it finally did happen I was shelved because I was singed to Warner Bros. So that happened. And by the time I had such a bad taste in my mouth, when it was over and I had spent all my money to support my music, and did all my crappy music videos for my YouTube page or had bad management deals or whatever it was I was just kind of like "You know what? I just wanna make music, I'm not interested, I don't need to get singed. I just want to release my music and you know what, if it's meant to be, it will be." That's when I got singed to ?A& M Interscope Records, and it just all worked out. My experience with music, I'm not going to say extremely negative but it's definitely been a grind, it's been grimy, it hasn't been a pretty ?process. Its left me crying, you know, on the carpet in my tiny apartment with, like, no money. But it's been worth it, it's my passion, my dream, it's what I love to do. And I don't mind going broke for it. I love what I do. Now, it's all coming together and it's all worth it and it's really starting to happen now.?

Q: What's it like being on the road and getting to play your music for your fans??

KG: It's so incredible. I just want to live on the road. I can't understand artist that don't want to perform and like get on stage and do their songs for all their fans every night. If I'm not performing every night I get totally depressed. I know that sounds really weird but I hate sitting at home and not having a 1 a.m. performance now. It kills me. I love being on tour, I love being on the road. It's the most amazing feeling ever. I live for it; I love it.?

Q: Who are your inspirations on your style?

KG: My style is a little crazy. I'm always trying to, like, I think I'm toning it down, but then I always end up just doing my own thing. My biggest style inspirations come from the '90s. I'm really inspired by TLC, Janet Jackson, and designers like Jeremy Scott. I'm hugely inspired by Club Kids from New York back in the '90s. I'm inspired by the drag queen scene. Combat boots and the torn off jeans and a baggy shirt--I love that look. I love Kayne West, I'm really inspired by him a lot.?

Q: I know that you recently had a tour for your EP "Against The Wall." What was your favorite city and who was the loudest??

KG: The loudest was my favorite. Chicago was my favorite. I did this show at a local gay club called Roscoe's and I didn't know what to expect because I've done lots of gays clubs since I started performing. My biggest audience and my most loyal has been my gay fan base. But I definitely would have to say Roscoe's in Chicago was the most impressive. They knew all the songs, all the lyrics to my songs and they were singing them back to me so loud, I couldn't even hear myself in the monitors. It was just so piercingly loud that I actually started to cry because it was so beautiful to have that experience where the people knew my music. It was just the energy in it was like heartbreaking in the best way. It was the culmination of, you know, all the years that I spent struggling and having hope that it will all work out.?

Q: What are three passions that you have that your fans wouldn't know about?

KG: Let me ask my mom because she knows me.?To her mom in the background: "Name three passions that I have that fans wouldn't know about": Animals, art. I can be obsessive about art and artists. Like Renaissance artist, most particularly, Leonardo Da Vinci, and ,like, the history of things, knowing the background of that story behind it. Animals, art, and spirituality.?

Q: Musically speaking, what producers or other artists would you love to collaborate with??

KG: I would really love to collaborate with Gwen Stefani, and M.I.A.; artists that kind of make sense with me vocally. And in terms of style, I'm a very visual artist, I really love Pharell, I love people that really care about drums and I like beat-heavy. I'd love to work with Cee Lo. I don't know, there's a lot of them.?

Q: Can you describe your ideal day when you're not singing or acting??

KG: I'd have to say what I'm doing right now: having lunch with my mom, maybe going to yoga in the morning, you know, going to see a movie at night with my boyfriend, looking at different furniture. I just got a house, so I'm obsessed with decor?and art right now, finding cool pieces. Yeah, just shopping and hanging out with my mom. Very, very normal. But they?are?very rare the days, you know.?

India's Jindal Suspends Work at Bolivia Iron Ore Mine as Talks Falter

SANTA CRUZ, Bolivia--India's Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. (532286.BY) has suspended operations at its iron ore mine in Bolivia as last-ditch talks with the government to rescue the struggling project appear to have failed, according to Jindal executives in Bolivia.

Jindal's chief legal counsel in Bolivia, Jorge Gallardo, and other company managers said Wednesday that operations at the El Mutun mine were suspended and that negotiations had been stopped due to legal problems that made cancellation of the project "imminent."

In a statement, Jindal said it had "suspended its contractual obligations and informed the government of its intention to terminate the joint venture contract for El Mutun." Jindal executives said the company will leave Bolivia if the government doesn't signal its willingness to renegotiate the contract by July 8.

Mr. Gallardo said judicial charges levied by the authorities against Jindal executives as well as the Bolivian government's seizure of $36 million in cash guarantees posted by the Indian firm had generated conditions "unsuited to further negotiation or investment".

El Mutun is a vast iron ore deposit on Bolivia's border with Brazil which is estimated to contain 40 billion tons of ore.

In 2006, Jindal and Bolivian President Evo Morales signed a $2.1 billion contract to develop the mine and build a steel mill near the river port of Puerto Suarez.

But the ambitious project once showcased by Mr. Morales as an example of how his government and multinational companies could work as equal partners has been stalled for years.

The government accuses Jindal of violating the terms of the contract by not meeting its investment schedule. Jindal has blamed the government for failing to provide the gas and infrastructure necessary to move the project ahead.

Jindal began notifying Bolivian employees and contractors of plans to shut down the mine last month, pending last-minute negotiations with the government.

A chief engineer at the mine contacted by telephone also confirmed that operations "have been suspended."

Jindal wants the Morales administration to downsize the project due to the state's inability to provide the 10 million cubic meters of gas per day it needs for the steel works.

Bolivia's state oil and gas company YPFB said in April that it could only provide 2.5 million cubic meters of gas a day.

Jindal responded by proposing their investment be reduced.

Mining Minister Mario Virreira says that negotiations can't continue because Jindal's chief operating officer in Bolivia, Vikrant Gujral, can't be contacted.

Mr. Gujral is in India, according to Jindal executives, who say his return to Bolivia is being held up by legal charges filed against him and two other company officers, including Mr. Gallardo and Arvin Sharma, who is also India's honorary consul in Bolivia.

"The penal persecution initiated by a government prosecutor against our principal executives has not been withdrawn," Jindal said in its statement.

The Interior Ministry said the charges against the executives are related to "contract violations" and unwillingness to turn over company records for a government audit.
