How is a developer supposed to get noticed when there are thousands upon thousands of other apps in the same store?

A developer can rely on search and word-of-mouth, but that's only going to get them so far. How is a developer supposed to get their app featured on the platform storefront? How are they supposed to tell users and publications about their app? And just how can they convince users to actually download the app? Is it better to be flashy or funny, informative or intriguing? Companies have asked employees to work from home, the military has stopped training outdoors, and pictures of Singapore's iconic Marine Bay Sands towers barely visible through the haze have been splashed across social media platforms?and newspapers.

Despite the international blame game, the immediate cause was clear enough: fires used to clear land in Sumatra for farming and palm oil plantations. A local meteorological agency reported nearly 150 hotspots alone in Riau Province, itself a hotspot for mining, logging, and palm oil production.

Environmental advocacy group Greenpeace released a statement saying that the fires illustrated how Indonesia?s government policies aimed at reducing deforestation had failed?since half of them were in areas off-limits to land clearing.

Each year slash and burn practices in Indonesia shroud neighboring Singapore and Malaysia in thick haze. As deforestation has accelerated in recent years, it has worsened.

On Thursday,?Singapore sent a delegation from its environmental agency to Jakarta to call for immediate action.?Singapore?s environment minister, Vivian Balakrishnan, issued an angry statement?on his Facebook page saying no country or corporation ?has the right to pollute the air at the expense of Singaporeans? health and well-being.??

But Indonesia shot back its own statement: Singapore should stop ?behaving like a child,? said Indonesia?s?Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare, Agung Laksono, who oversees fire response.

Mr. Balakrishnan had asked the Indonesian government to name and shame the companies involved in the illegal burning. But Indonesia?s forestry ministry launched back, saying?Singapore and Malaysia shared the responsibility for putting pressure on the resource extraction industry since many of companies were based in their countries.

Social issues still fire up GOP despite 2012 loss

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Republican lawmakers have a message for those who want the party to soften its emphasis on social conservatism in hopes of reaching a wider national audience: Not so fast.

House Republicans flexed their cultural and conservative muscles Tuesday, passing the most restrictive abortion measure in years. They also advanced legislation to crack down on immigrants living illegally in the country, even as senators pursue a plan that would offer those same millions a shot at citizenship.

The actions reflect a roiling debate among Republicans over why they lost two elections to President Barack Obama, and how best to rebuild a winning formula.

Many Republicans in Congress and elsewhere think the party's establishment erred in concluding the GOP must embrace "comprehensive immigration reform" to attract Hispanic voters. And they dismiss the notion that Republicans should soft-pedal their opposition to abortion, a subject on which they say public opinion is moving their way.

"There's been a misleading thought as to what happened after the last election cycle," said Rep. John Fleming, R-La.

"Most Americans do not support amnesty, especially without securing the borders," he said, regarding the idea of citizenship for those here illegally. As for abortion, Fleming said, there's growing public concern about second-trimester abortions, "so we're actually gaining ground."

Like Democrats, Republicans often discuss ways to keep their base loyal while attracting independent voters near the political center. The urgency rose last fall, when Mitt Romney became the fifth Republican in six presidential elections to lose the popular vote.

On abortion and reproductive rights, some strategists say the greatest need is for Republicans ? especially men ? to steer clear of incendiary language such as "legitimate rape." They know there's no way the Democratic-led Senate will embrace the House bill, which would bar abortions 20 weeks after conception.

Tuesday's debate was largely symbolic but important, Republican leaders said.

Immigration's fate in Congress is less certain. It's increasingly clear, however, that many Republicans think party elders were hasty in saying the GOP won't win future presidential elections unless it agrees to far-reaching immigration changes that include new pathways to citizenship.

"What an idiot," Washington state Republican Chairman Kirby Wilbur said Tuesday of Sen. Lindsey Graham's recent comments on the matter. Graham, R-S.C., said that without "immigration reform" along the lines the Senate is weighing, "we're in a demographic death spiral as a party."

"The pathology report of the death of the Republican Party is grossly overstated," Wilbur said. Republicans must do better jobs of messaging and finding voters, but they should not overreact to Romney's relatively narrow loss to Obama, he said. Obama won 51 percent of the popular vote to Romney's 47 percent but defeated the Republican by a wide margin in the Electoral College, 332-206.

Democrats want to portray Republicans as out of step with the nation's values on gay rights, women's rights and common-sense solutions to illegal immigration.

During Tuesday's House debate on abortion, Rep. Ami Bera, D-Calif., asked to bring up a student loan bill instead. "This is a direct attack on women's rights," he said after being overruled.

Republicans responded by sending a parade of women to the House microphones.

"We are changing hearts and minds," said Rep. Ann Wagner, R-Mo. "We hear more and more evidence that life begins at conception." She said she covets the day when abortion is "absolutely unthinkable."

Rep. Jim Gerlach, R-Pa., said he supports the anti-abortion bill, but "our focus really ought to be on jobs, the economy and those kinds of issues."

But Fleming, a former Navy and family physician, said there's no political or policy harm in trying to restrict abortion.

And the best way to win over Hispanics, blacks and Asians, he said, is to encourage the conservatives among them to enter local politics and run for office as Republicans.

"I see a bright, bright future for the Republican Party and conservatism in general," Fleming said. But it will happen only if "we have people of all sectors who join us in our beliefs and principles," he said.

Recent polls provide fodder for both sides in the immigration debate. They show Americans support allowing those in the country illegally to stay and become citizens if they meet certain requirements. Polls that ask about giving immigrants a chance to become citizens without specifying conditions find less support.

Republicans appear to be following the immigration debate more closely than Democrats. That might help conservative Republicans generate enthusiasm in next year's midterm elections, which typically draw fewer voters than do presidential races.

It's too early to guess how immigration might play in the 2016 presidential contest.

On abortion, polls find little change in Americans' sentiment. The General Social Survey, which has tracked opinion since the 1970s, finds support for legal abortion has been roughly stable. About 4 in 10 last year said abortion should be legal if a woman wants one for any reason, on par with the average results over time.

'The Voice' gives Danielle every chance to shine

After Monday's live final performances on "The Voice," it?s pretty clear who the show hopes will be crowned the champion on Tuesday.

Danielle Bradbery was given the prime slots and closed the show Monday night. Before she?d even uttered her first note of ?Born to Fly,? Adam Levine already had anointed her the winner and Blake Shelton, the 16-year-old's coach, had said (again) that she was one of the most important artists they?d ever seen walk across the show's stage.

And just in case the sentiment was unclear, both stars left the show?s viewers with an unmistakable last impression.

?What else can I possibly say? Your perfection is almost boring me at this point. It?s too perfect,? Adam said.

?As your coach, I?d like to sit here and say coach-y type things, but at the end of the day ? I?m one of the millions of people out there that you have wrapped around your finger,? Blake said. ?Thank God that you came to 'The Voice' to debut yourself, because you are such an important person in music and I can?t say enough about you.?

Some might argue that this is quite a lot of praise to put on a teenager.

Nevertheless, ?The Voice? spared nothing in giving her the chance to shine.

Danielle sang in the back half of every one of the live performance shows, and that wasn?t about to change this late in the game. On Monday, not only did she sing last, she was involved in three of the final four performances. If late impressions are what woo voters, she got her fair share and then some.

Her three songs were by Patty Loveless, Pam Tillis and Sara Evans, continuing the Blake strategy of keeping Michelle squarely in the country lane. It?s not the most fascinating approach to song selection in the world, but it works for the superstar every year and it did again on Monday.

The Swon Brothers, on the other hand, finished all three of their individual performances before Danielle took the stage for a second time. Except for a random group performance with the rest of the top 12, they were done for the night with 40 minutes left in the show. It doesn?t take a conspiracy theorist to guess that the likable Okies on Blake's team weren?t the top choice of whoever made the schedule.

That?s nothing new for the brothers. They?ve taken the opposite road from Danielle, having performed in the first half of every live show and survived where others in that position have faltered. They were again nothing but fun. And they did get Shakira to wave a little ?Go Okies?pennant ? although considering that she followed that by wearing Michelle-like glasses and a tiny cowboy hat to honor Danielle, she was mostly trying to get some airtime on a night where she had no remaining singers of her own to support.

Michelle Chamuel had the most memorable performance of the night with ?Why? by Annie Lennox. Part of the song was sung to an image of her in a mirror, which fascinated Blake to no end. She and coach Usher said more nice things about each other, and the hopeful still has the most range of any singer in the competition.

But for ?The Voice,? range isn?t as important as genre. Though Usher did his part by having Michelle reprise Taylor Swift?s ?I Knew You Were Trouble,? she?s an indie-rock girl in a country competition, and that likely means a runner-up finish and a front-row seat for Danielle?s coronation Tuesday.
