It?s lunchtime during the week at Carmel Caf?, a Mediterranean-themed restaurant and wine bar tucked in a shopping plaza off McMullen Booth Road. Unlike the dinner service, when customers linger at tables and couches in the dining room, lunch is more about speed and efficiency.
A regular customer, a retired woman, walks in, approaches the bar and begins to order her lunch from the tablet. She uses one hand to hold her purse and the other to swipe her fingers across the face of an iPad propped on a pedestal.
Wipe, wipe, press, poke, poke, poke. Order finished and sent to the kitchen, she walks to the dining room to wait for her food and drink.
When it opened in late 2010, Carmel Caf? ordered 40 iPads for the dining room ? one for every table. Racks of electrical chargers and a syncing station are hidden in a console next to the hostess station.
