NFL scouting combine: Sights and sounds

Quotables

?If you bring Peyton in and it doesn?t work, it isn?t Peyton?s fault. There?s going be someone?s butt in someone?s briefcase at the end of the day, and it?s not going to be Peyton?s.? NFL Network analyst Brian Billick, on the risk of a team signing Peyton Manning in the event the Colts release him.

??It would be cool to play with Joe Thomas. He?s the man. He makes it look easy. He came right in and was a stud.? Boise State offensive tackle Nate Potter, on what it would mean to be drafted by the Browns.

?I have a different story than a lot of these guys. Grew up in a rough neighborhood in Atlanta, dropped out of high school in 11th grade and got in some trouble, ran with the wrong crowd. Finally saw the light, got my GED, took the test and passed all five parts on the first time. That January, I went to school and never looked back.? Outside linebacker Bruce Irvin from West Virginia, projected as a mid-round pick

?Being suspended because you?re signing autographs and getting money for it or selling your helmets or things like that, that can be looked at as a youthful transgression and those guys not quite understanding the ramifications. That doesn?t mean that they?re bad people. That doesn?t mean they?re bad football players. What you have to determine is ?Did they learn from their experience and will they not repeat the transgression?? ? Chiefs coach Romeo Crennel, on the three Ohio State Buckeyes at the combine involved in Tattoogate ? left tackle Mike Adams, wide receiver DeVier Posey and running back Boom Herron

Combine whispers

n Offensive tackle Mike Adams from Ohio State is not having an impressive combine. He bench pressed 225 pounds only 19 times, which was among the fewest for offensive linemen. By comparison, top-rated tackle Matt Kalil of USC recorded 30 reps at 225 pounds.

n Running backs are timed in the 40-yard dash on Sunday. Chris Rainey from Florida predicts he will run it in fewer than 4.2 seconds. The record of 4.21 was set by LSU wide receiver Trindon Holliday in 2010. Holliday is on the Texans? roster, but rarely plays.

n Offensive tackle Marcus Zusevics from Iowa tore his left pectoral muscle while doing the bench press Friday at the combine. The injury will require surgery and puts his draft status in jeopardy. Zusevics is projected as a right tackle and was expected to be picked in the fourth or fifth round.

n Tackle Donald Stephenson from Oklahoma ran an official 4.94 40-yard draft, the fastest among offensive linemen at the combine. Continued...

n According to the Facts Book, it requires 3,000 cows to provide the NFL with a year?s supply of balls. Of course, the cows aren?t raised strictly for their leather.

n John McLain of the Houston Chronicle is predicting the first three players taken in the draft will be quarterbacks ? Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III and Ryan Tannehill.

n The Chiefs want to keep wide receiver Dwayne Bowe, but Crennel said for salary-cap reasons it might be difficult.
