#GivingTuesday Shines a Light on Philanthropy, Service and American Generosity and Creates Opening Day for the Giving Season

2,500+ Partners Harness Social Media to Get People Talking about Causes, Needs and Innovative Ways to Give Back. Blackbaud reports 53% increase in online donations on inaugural #GivingTuesday compared to same day last year.

New York, NY (PRWEB) November 28, 2012

An unprecedented partnership of more than 2,500 charities, volunteer organizations, corporations, community centers and foundations made history yesterday with the inaugural #GivingTuesday, marked by activities and campaigns in all 50 U.S. states. The #GivingTuesday movement created a new day on the calendar to mark the opening of the Giving Season, with volunteer projects, online fundraisers, and collections for the needy with many focusing on Superstorm Sandy victims. The movement's goals of inviting more people to think about giving and encouraging generosity of time and resources were embraced by grassroots organizers, corporate and retail leaders and an emerging cadre of entrepreneurial philanthropists. The #GivingTuesday message was also echoed in statements from Mayors of Chicago, Philadelphia, Detroit and New York, philanthropy leaders including Bill Gates, and the White House. Early indicators point to the promise and potential of the movement. Blackbaud (http://www.blackbaud.com), a global provider of software and services to nonprofits and a founding partner of #GivingTuesday, processed $10 million in online donations on inaugural #GivingTuesday ? a 53% increase when compared to the Tuesday after Thanksgiving the previous year.

Organizers hope this outpouring of giving and awareness will catalyze a sustained period of robust and creative giving during the holiday season.

An "Opening Day" for Giving

Coming on the heels of the country's biggest shopping days, Black Friday and Cyber Monday, #GivingTuesday was designed to help change the national dialogue about giving and mobilize an "opening day" for charitable giving and volunteer support for causes large and small. Born from conversations at New York City's 92nd Street Y, and supported by a Team of Influencers including some of the nation's leading foundation executives, philanthropy experts, public relations professionals and social media leaders, #GivingTuesday asked people to support their favorite charities and do something special to give back on November 27. Next year, #GivingTuesday will fall on December 3, 2013.

Social Media Helps Power a Movement about Generosity

The #GivingTuesday conversation reached millions of people on November 27 through a coordinated social media effort that included a Social Media Ambassadors program; special blog series; innovative platforms designed to help participants share information, tools and best practices; and a sustained Twitter and Facebook conversation. The social media conversation included thousands of posts and photos showcasing the variety of ways that people donated or gave back on November 27 and the plans they have to support causes throughout the holiday season.

The robust conversation resulted in #GivingTuesday becoming a trending topic on Twitter in the United States for much of the day on November 27 and intermittently trending as a global topic, as well. In addition, media outlets reaching all 50 U.S. states covered both local and national initiatives, fueling discussions about how organizations can make giving more accessible and relevant for future generations and emerging leaders.

Increased Support Points to a Promising Start to the "Giving Season"

In addition to the nationwide surge in conversations about giving, #GivingTuesday partners reported strong response to calls for increased support, volunteer efforts and matching grants. Many organizations have already started reporting the impact of their efforts on #GivingTuesday to their supporters and donors, encouraging them to maintain this momentum throughout the holiday season. From supplies to volunteer hours to pints of blood donated, or even miles walked or jogged for charity, the #GivingTuesday community asked people to help "Get out the Give" in thousands of ways that will have lasting impact.

###

About #GivingTuesday

#GivingTuesday is a movement to celebrate giving, invite more people to think about meaningful ways to give their time and talents, and provide incentives to give. This first-of-its-kind effort, starting with the November 27, 2012 kick-off day for the giving season, harnesses the collective power of a unique blend of partners?charities, families, businesses and individuals?to transform how people think about, talk about and participate in the giving season.

#GivingTuesday calls on inspiring, entrepreneurial people to take collaborative action to improve their local communities, to give back in better, smarter ways to the charities and causes they celebrate and to help create a better world. #GivingTuesday is harnessing the power of social media to create a national moment around the holidays that is dedicated to giving, similar to the way Black Friday and Cyber Monday have become days synonymous with holiday shopping.

A team of recognized experts and influencers, initially convened by leaders of 92nd Street Y and supported by a core group of founding partners, are spearheading this effort. Founding partners include the United Nations Foundation, Case Foundation, DonorsChoose.org, Mashable, Blackbaud, charity: water, GlobalGiving, Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA), Kiva, Darden Restaurant Group, Groupon, Unilever and VentureThree Capital. Leaders in philanthropy, social media, innovative giving, grassroots organizing, marketing and communications are providing counsel and resources to help build this movement.

Fed's Fisher presses for clearer fiscal outlook

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - A Federal Reserve official asked for a clearer fiscal outlook from political leaders on Thursday, saying that leaving it to the Fed to lead economic recovery efforts created a dangerous predicament.

Dallas Fed President Richard Fisher called for more action from the U.S. government to boost employment, saying there were limits to what monetary policy could do.

"We at the central bank have been carrying the load and this is a very dangerous predicament," Fisher, a self-described anti-inflation hawk, said during a lecture in Frankfurt.

The Federal Reserve said in its Beige Book report on Wednesday that the U.S. economy had performed at a "measured" pace in recent weeks and hiring remained modest.

"Monetary policy provides simply the fuel, but the incentive has to come from our fiscal authorities," Fisher added.

"The gas tank is full (with liquidity) and now we have to get someone to ... step on the accelerator to propel the job-creating machine in the United States. There is a limit to what a monetary authority can do. All we can do is provide liquidity."

U.S. political leaders are trying to broker an agreement to avoid a "fiscal cliff" - automatic spending cuts and tax increases early in 2013 unless Congress agrees an alternative - which threatens to derail growth in the world's biggest economy.

"I'm not advocating one solution or the other," Fisher said with respect to U.S. fiscal policy. "I'm begging for greater certainty."

He added that a temporary fix would not help employment.

Fisher said the Fed would tighten monetary policy when needed but "we are not there yet".

Fisher, who is a critic of easy Fed policy, also said he would like the central bank to define how far it is willing to go with its monetary stimulus.

"I personally advocate that we do it sooner," he said.

Asked when the United States would see a substantial improvement in employment, Fisher said: "Only when we will get clear signals from the fiscal authorities."

"You can't expect somebody to hire somebody ... until you have confidence you will get a return on the cost."

"From a monetary standpoint, we have given the fuel ... now it's up to the private sector to engage. And it won't happen until we get clarity on the fiscal side."

Acer Aspire V5-571-6891

The Acer Aspire V5-571-6891 ($499.99 list) is a Windows 8 budget desktop replacement laptop with very few compromises. It comes with a large 15.6-inch display with a full keyboard, multi-touch trackpad, DVD burner, dual-band (2.4GHz and 5GHz) Wi-Fi, USB 3.0 and HDMI. It gives the value minded user all he needs to do work locally and over the Internet, and earns our Editors' Choice for budget laptops.

Design and Features
The V5-571-6891 is a thin, black desktop replacement laptop. Its dimensions measure about 10 by 15 by 0.91 inches (HWD), with a weight a smidge above five pounds (5.07 pounds). This makes the system a lot more portable than older laptops that can be twice as thick. The system's chiclet style keyboard is comfortable to use, with a good key feel. There's a full numeric keypad to the right side of the keyboard, a plus for students and users who need to deal with numbers. The keyboard isn't backlit, but you really don't expect one at this price point. The one-piece trackpad is multitouch, so you can easily swipe the new Windows 8 interface, including the gestures that bring up the Charms tool bar, as well as other gestures needed for Windows 8 like swipes from the edges, two finger clicks, and multitouch scrolling.

The system comes with a 15.6-inch widescreen LCD panel, with a 1,366 by 768 resolution. 1,366 by 768 is good for up to 720p HD video, though 1080p videos will have to be scaled down to fit. 1,366 by 768 means that user interface elements like close boxes and icons will be larger than they would be on a 1,600 by 900 or 1,920 by 1,080 resolution screen. While this may be a little low res for a high-end user, 1,366 by 768 is perfectly adequate for the general user who doesn't need high resolution for photos or videos. In fact, a user with aging eyesight will welcome the larger letters and icons in desktop mode. All of this is moot in the Windows 8 user interface (aka Start screen), since Windows automatically scales the tiles to fill the screen.

The system comes with Microsoft's new Windows 8 operating system, like almost all PCs sold this season. If you've never used Windows 8 before, it will be an interesting learning experience, since you're meant to select programs from the Start screen rather than opening them from the now missing Start menu. Using the trackpad to move the cursor around the screen works fine, but it would behoove you to take a look at a Windows 8 primer online to learn some of the more useful commands. At the very least, get used to swiping with two fingers to scroll elements from off screen on to the screen. If you've used Windows 8 or RT on a tablet like the Microsoft Surface RT or on a touch-optimized system like the Sony VAIO Duo 11 (D11213CX), you will probably miss the touch screen. Windows 8 was really designed to work better with a touch screen: On the V5-571-6891, the Start screen gets in the way somewhat, since you have to scroll the interface back and forth with the trackpad. It works, but you may find yourself reaching for the screen to click on tiles and move the Start screen around. Once you're in a program it should be okay, since programs still act the way you expect them to, and they're easier to work on when they are blown up to full screen.

There are already quite a few icons pre-loaded in the desktop mode They number among the usual bloatware subjects, including eBay, Netflix, WildTangent Games, and Norton Online Backup. If you're a current user of any of these services, the icons are a convenience, but otherwise they just clutter the desktop. Strangely enough, the same tiles in the Start menu aren't as cluttered, as they are neatly stacked and don't look out of place in the Start menu.

The V5-571-6891 comes with a pair of USB 2.0 ports, one USB 3.0 port, a full HDMI port, and a port for the system's combination VGA and Ethernet dongle. The USB 3.0 port helps to future-proof the laptop, and is colored blue to differentiate it from the pair of slower black USB 2.0 ports. We would like to see them all USB 3.0, but we understand a budget buyer may not need more than one speedy USB 3.0 port at this time. Just make sure to use the correct port when connecting a recently purchased hard drive (older USB 2.0 drives and peripherals like mice will work in all three USB ports, but newer, USB 3.0 devices won't work as fast as they could if you plug them into the USB 2.0 ports). The full size HDMI port is nice; we wish that the VGA and Ethernet ports were also full-sized. There is horizontal room on the chassis for them, but the case may be physically too thin for the VGA port. The included dongle "works," but it's also just another piece to be lost in your commute bag.

The built in tray-loading DVD burner is a throwback to the now-dying standard, though it will come in handy from time to time if you have a large library of movies or boxed software. Movies looked clear on the laptop's screen, with room filling sound from the Dolby-optimized speakers.

The system comes with an Intel Core i3-processor, six GB of system memory, a 500GB hard drive, and Intel integrated graphics. Until this year, you'd expect to possibly get an Intel Pentium or AMD E-class processor, 2-3GB of memory, and a 320GB hard drive for $499. With this setup, you're unlikely to find many programs online and off the shelf that won't run on the V5-571-6891. 6GB is a nice touch, you'll be able to keep many tabs open in Internet Explorer or Chrome with that much memory. This level of equipment is refreshing, because until recently, netbooks still had problems running programs like light 3D games that require DX10/DX11, netbooks had much lower resolution screens, and many apps ran dog slow on systems with an ultra low voltage 1.5GHz processor like in a netbook. The V5-571-6891 comes with a standard one-year warranty.

Performance
Acer Aspire V5-571-6891 Speaking of performance, the V5-571-6891 ran all the benchmark tests. The system isn't a speed demon, but it has enough oomph to make short work of day-to-day tasks. Its PCMark7 score of 2090 points is on par for what we've seen from budget laptops like the Asus U56E-BBL6 (2,255 points), our former budget Editors' Choice laptop. We don't have comparable budget laptop numbers for our new Handbrake 0.9.8 test (1:57) and Photoshop CS6 (8:43) yet, but suffice to say this is a decent baseline number. You can do occasional multimedia tasks on the system, but it's really made for consuming media like online videos and photos, both of which display without a hitch, even 1080p HD videos like the latest Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome webisodes. Its 3D gaming is understandably weak, though the system comes with Intel HD Graphics 4000 instead of the base 2500 version, so you'll get a little better performance than you'd expect. High-end games are out of the question, but lighter fare like World of Warcraft or Torchlight is easily in the system's capabilities.

The V5-571-6891 comes with a removable 4-cell battery, which is good for a somewhat anemic four-hour battery life (4:07) on our video rundown test. This is significantly less than Acer's five-hour battery life claims, but the battery life is sufficient for a movie plus a bunch of Web surfing around the house. If you're buying the V5-571-6891 for home use or even students that may forget their power adapter in their dorm room, four hours battery life is enough, as you wouldn't be straying from a power plug for too long. Of course, the battery won't last you a cross-continental airline flight, so this system is less suitable for road warriors. If you are one of these type of users, it would be best to upgrade to a higher-capacity battery or look for a system that will last a little longer like the Dell XPS 12, or the Acer Aspire S3-391-6046, both of which last about five hours on the same rundown test. Tablets running Windows RT like the Asus Vivo Tab RT last even longer: almost ten hours.

The Acer Aspire V5-571-6891 is an interesting beast. It has everything you'd want in a $500 laptop, minus a long battery life. Its pricing recalls the netbooks of 2008-2011, but it's so much more powerful than any of those, with a much larger screen. The budget Toshiba Satellite C655-S5542 is less expensive than the V5-571-6891 by $99, but you give up USB 3.0, HDMI, 3GB of memory, and quite a bit of performance due to a Celeron processor. For $500, it's surprising to find a latest-generation Intel Core processor, 4 to 6GB of memory, a 500GB hard drive, large screen, and a full keyboard and Windows-8 compliant trackpad It balances its thinness and large screen well, to the point that it is quite portable around the house or campus. It's a lot more modern than the Asus U56E-BBL6, which uses a second-generation Intel Core processor, is bigger and heavier, and doesn't come with Windows 8. The Acer Aspire V5-571-6891 meets the requirements for the basic user, with extra flourishes like a numeric keypad, good sound, and exceeds expectations for a budget laptop. Therefore we award the V5-571-6891 our Editors' Choice for budget laptops.

Nine radar images of asteroid 2007 PA8

ScienceDaily (Nov. 27, 2012) ? A collage shows nine radar images of near-Earth asteroid 2007 PA8 that were obtained between Oct. 31 and Nov. 13, 2012, with data collected by NASA's 230-foot-wide (70-meter) Deep Space Network antenna at Goldstone, Calif. On Nov. 5 at 8:42 a.m. PST (11:42 a.m. EST/16:42 UTC), the object came about 4 million miles (6.5 million kilometers) from Earth, or 17 times the distance between Earth and the moon.

The images of 2007 PA8 reveal possible craters, boulders, an irregular, asymmetric shape, and very slow rotation. The asteroid measures approximately one mile wide (about 1.6 kilometers).

Each panel shows one image per day, and all of them are oriented so rotation is counterclockwise. Each image is shown at the same scale and covers 1.1 miles (1.7 kilometers) from top to bottom. The resolution of the images varies from day to day as the asteroid's distance changed. The images achieve resolutions as fine as 12 feet (3.75 meters) per pixel on Nov. 5 and 6, when the asteroid was closest. The resolution was 25 feet (7.5 meters) per pixel on Nov. 2, 3 and 8, and 62 feet (18.75 meters) per pixel on Oct. 31 and Nov. 11 to 13.

New radar measurements of 2007 PA8's distance and line-of-sight velocity refined calculations of its orbit about the sun, enabling reliable computation of the asteroid's motion for the next 632 years. 2007 PA8 is not a threat to Earth. The 2012 flyby was the closest since 1880. The next flyby with Earth closer than the one that occurred this year will be in 2488, when the asteroid will approach no closer than 3.6 million miles (5.8 million kilometers).

NASA detects, tracks and characterizes asteroids and comets passing close to Earth using both ground- and space-based telescopes. The Near-Earth Object Observations Program, commonly called "Spaceguard," discovers these objects, characterizes a subset of them, and plots their orbits to determine if any could be potentially hazardous to our planet.

JPL manages the Near-Earth Object Program Office for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. JPL is a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena.

Just days after Adi Pito married a woman from the town of Kiryat Malachi, he heard that a rocket from Gaza had struck an apartment building there, killing three residents.

?I was worried about my wife,? says Mr. Pito, who was in a nearby city at the time. ?If you ask me, I think we have to destroy Gaza. I think they are animals, not people,? he says, pulling at his new wedding ring as he stood outside the damaged apartment yesterday. ?It?s the right thing to do.?

But in towns across southern Israel that have been hit by rockets, other residents only reluctantly express support for a potential expansion of Israel?s Pillar of Defense operation and express sympathy for the suffering on the other side of the border, where at least 53 Palestinians have been killed and hundreds injured since the operation began five days ago.

?When people say, ?Let?s kill them,? I don?t think they really mean to do it,? says Yehudit Bar Hay, a trauma expert at the Israel Center for Victims of Terror and War, known as NATAL. ?It is an angry feeling but ? we don?t want to kill the people of Gaza. We see the mothers and the children, we are sorry for them.?

Even those who are ?very, very injured? from the trauma of living under rocket fire say they don?t want to hurt anybody, adds Ms. Bar Hay, who lives less than a mile from the Gaza border.?

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said today that Israel?s military ?is prepared for a significant expansion of its operations,? even as at least 16,000 reservists have been called up for a potential ground invasion. The Defense Ministry has authorized the calling up of as many as 75,000 reservists ? more than six times as many as participated in the 2008-09 Gaza war.

But while some Israelis say war is necessary or inevitable, few are happy about it.?

?Who wants this war? Nobody in Israel,? says Ashdod resident Bebert Avitan, his pink-rimmed glasses hanging from his neck.

Part of the reason for a lack of public pressure may be the effectiveness of Israel?s Iron Dome system, which has kept casualties very low despite a barrage of rockets from Gaza. See today's Monitor story on the Iron Dome system.?

?Hamas apparently has much greater capability than it had in the last war on Gaza,? says Galia Golan, a political scientist at the Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya, but notes that there hasn?t been a parallel uptick in Israeli casualties. ?Because Iron Dome has been relatively successful, there has been less pressure on the government or within the government to launch a ground attack.?

Only three Israelis, all from one building in Kiryat Malachi, have been killed in the recent escalation.

As the evening news shows a picture of a bombed out building, lifelong resident Masodi Sugaker says, ?It?s so sad to see this. To [have to] make everything new after this? Why? Because of Hamas.?

?Hamas exploits their own people, the Palestinians,? says she adds.

Her sister, Hanna Shukrun, adds, ?We don?t want [war],? because there are kids [in Gaza].

But she says, ?Israel can?t just sit here and do nothing?. Our army doesn?t need to wait until they have many weapons.?

(This story was edited after posting to correct the name of Galia Golan from IDC Herzliya. We apologize for the error).

(AP) ? Syrian rebels captured a helicopter base just outside Damascus Sunday in what an activist called a "blow to the morale of the regime" near President Bashar Assad's seat of power.

The takeover claim showed how rebels are advancing in the area of the capital, though they are badly outgunned, making inroads where Assad's power was once unchallenged. Rebels have also been able to fire mortar rounds into Damascus recently.

The director of the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Rami Abdul-Rahman, said rebels seized control of the Marj al-Sultan base on the outskirts of Damascus on Sunday morning. He said at least 15 rebels and eight soldiers were killed in the fighting that started a day earlier. The rebels later withdrew from the base.

Rebels appear to be trying to take over air bases and destroy aircraft in order to prevent the regime from using them in attacks against opposition forces around the country.

The rebels have no protection against the attack helicopters and fighter jets that have been blasting their positions.

Rebels have been attacking air bases in different parts of Syria, mostly in the northern regions of Idlib and Aleppo.

In the battle at the base outside Damascus, Abdul-Rahman and Damascus-based activist Maath al-Shami said rebels destroyed two helicopters with rocket propelled grenades and captured a tank. They say the base, which is on the eastern outskirts of Damascus, houses several radar positions.

"This is a blow to the morale of the regime, because it is close to the heart of the capital," said Abdul-Rahman, referring to the base that is about 15 kilometers (10 miles) from Damascus.

Al-Shami said the rebels withdrew from the base after they captured some ammunition. He said they feared counterstrikes by regime aircraft.

An amateur video posted online showed rebels walking next to two destroyed helicopters. At least three other helicopters appeared undamaged. Black smoke billowed in the distance.

Another video showed several radar posts on hills inside the large compound. Parked military trucks stood inside as rebels roamed freely.

The activist videos appeared genuine and corresponded to other AP reporting about the events depicted. Syria restricts the access of reporters.

The Observatory also reported violence in other parts of Syria, including the country's largest city of Aleppo in the north and the capital itself.

It said rebels on Sunday captured a training base for the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine-General Command near the Damascus suburb of Douma. The PFLP-GC is one of the Palestinian factions most loyal to Assad.

The PFLP-GC said in a statement late Saturday that the base was under attack. It said that thousands of activists and fighters who fought against Israel were trained at the base over the past 30 years.

Also Sunday, the Observatory said a bomb targeted a bus in the southern village of Othman, killing at least five people and wounding dozens. It said rebels and troops clashed in the southern region of Quneitra on the edge of the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The Local Coordination Committees, another activist group, said residents found 12 bodies in the Damascus suburb of Daraya, scene of heavy clashes between rebels and government troops over the past few days.

State TV said troops clashed with al-Qaida militants in Daraya, killing some of them and confiscating a mortar that they were using in their attacks.

The station said that troops killed an al-Qaida affiliated Palestinian militant known as Abu Suhaib in the Damascus suburb of Hajira. It said his group was behind several bombings in Syria that killed and wounded dozens of people.

Assad's regime blames the revolt on a foreign conspiracy. It accuses Saudi Arabia and Qatar, along with the United States, other Western countries and Turkey, of funding, training and arming the rebels, whom it calls terrorists.

Syria's conflict erupted in March 2011 with an uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime, inspired by other Arab Spring revolts. It quickly morphed into a civil war that has since killed more than 40,000 people, according to activists.

Eight days of fighting between?Israel?and Palestinians in the?Hamas-ruled enclave of?Gaza?diverted U.S. President Barack Obama's attention to the?Middle East?as he toured?Asia?on his first trip abroad after this month's election.

Hague told the BBC it was "time for a huge effort on the?Middle East?peace process."

"This is what I have been calling for, particularly calling for the?United States?now after their election to show the necessary leadership on this over the coming months, because they have crucial leverage with?Israel?and no other country has," Hague said.

"We're coming to the final chance maybe for a two state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict," he added.

Ala. deputy fatally shot, 2nd wounded in exchange

FAIRHOPE, Ala. (AP) ? An Alabama deputy sheriff was fatally shot and another deputy was critically wounded Friday during a confrontation with a man they were checking on, who was also killed, authorities said.

The Baldwin County Sheriff's Office said the deputies were responding to a call at about 4 p.m. CST Friday expressing concern about the welfare of Michael Jansen of the Fairhope area, about 20 miles southeast of Mobile. Authorities said in a news release that deputies encountered Jansen at his mobile home and "were engaged in an officer involved shooting" when they were both shot.

Both deputies were transported to USA Medical Center in Mobile, where Deputy Scott Ward was pronounced dead. The second deputy, whose name had not been released early Saturday, was in critical condition.

Authorities said Jansen, who was believed to be in his 50s, "was also shot during the exchange and he was pronounced dead at the scene."

Investigator Eric Winberg told The Associated Press that authorities were sorting out what happened and not immediately releasing further details.

The county's Major Crimes Task Force was investigating the shooting.

Toyota, Honda beset by recalls in 2012

17 hrs.

Japan?s two largest automakers appear to be locked in a race to achieve the dubious distinction of having recalled more vehicles than any other automaker during 2012 for an array of safety-related problems that range from fire hazards to seat belt issues.

The latest problem involves 140,000 Toyota Tacoma pickups which, the maker says, could experience corrosion severe enough that their space tires could fall off while driving.? Toyota has recalled several other models, including its Sienna minivan, for similar problems in the past.

The announcement comes barely a month after Toyota revealed it would have to recall 7.5 million vehicles worldwide due to faulty power window switches that could catch fire, including 2.5 million vehicles sold in the U.S.? It was the largest single recall in the maker?s history.? That followed by days Honda?s announcement of three separate safety callbacks impacting 1.7 million vehicles.

The two automakers have collectively led the list of recalled vehicles for the past three years, Toyota in 2009 and 2010 largely due to its massive problems with so-called unintended acceleration, and Honda in 2011 in the wake of an assortment of problems including defective airbags.

So far this year, sales numbers suggest that despite such problems, neither maker appears to be losing much momentum in the U.S. market. Quite the contrary. Toyota and Honda have experienced some of their biggest sales gains in years ? though at least some of those year-over-year increases were the result of last year?s devastating Japanese earthquake and tsunami which left both manufacturers struggling with product shortages. Many potential customers appeared to wait until this year, as supplies came back to normal.

Analyst Rebecca Lindland, of IHS Automotive does not expect Toyota?s recent safety problems to drive away loyal buyers, though she has warned that, ?for those people on the fence about buying a Toyota, this will have an impact.? It could be more difficult getting new buyers into the showroom.?

Working in their favor, however, the two makers have continued scoring well in a variety of recent quality and reliability studies.? The three Toyota brands sold in the U.S., Lexus, Scion and Toyota, topped the chart in the recent Consumer Reports Automotive Reliability Study, for example. But a senior automotive tester for the non-profit magazine also noted that it does not take recalls into consideration when determining the reliability of individual brands.

Who will have the most vehicles recalled this year remains to be seen. Toyota seemed on track to nab that doubtful honor again in 2011 ? until Honda announced a massive service action in the final days of the year.

Honda, in fact, is now facing several safety probes by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration affecting nearly 700,000 of its Odyssey minivans and Pilot SUVs. It is far from certain that those actions will result in recalls, however, and even if they did, whether any announcement would come in 2012.

Meanwhile, the two Japanese makers are by no means the only ones who have had safety-related problems in recent months.

Chrysler?s Jeep brand recalled 919,000 of its Liberty and Grand Cherokee SUVs this month due to an airbag problem.? And Ford faced an airbag problem of its own, last month, with the Fiesta subcompact. The bigger of the two U.S. makers has, meanwhile, experienced a string of recalls involving its popular Escape SUV ? both older versions as well as the new one launched this year.

Analysts say Ford?s bigger problem has been a general stumble in quality charts including the Consumer Reports reliability study and the recent J.D. Power Initial Quality Survey.

The latest Toyota recall impacts Tacoma pickups sold between 2001 and 2004 in 20 cold weather states, as well as the District of Columbia. The spare tire is stored under the cargo bed in those vehicles, where the plate that holds it in place can be corroded by contact with road salt. The maker plans to make repairs at no charge to consumers.

Black Friday: Stay Home and be Thankful
Crystal is thankful for the return of laughter!

I confess I fear Black Friday. As a child, I feared Black Friday the way others feared the dark, strangers and death.?Black Friday sounded?ominous?and lurking, something to feed my overly active childish imagination and nightmares. Black Friday -- a day where the sun never rises and darkness?suffocates?the unicorns. My family stayed in pajamas all day safely ensconced in our house, while we watched the television news coverage filled with images of crazed adult shoppers shoving and pushing each other over trivial things.

While my fear has dwindled (a little), I still refuse to leave the house on Black Friday. In fact, I prefer to stay tucked away inside my house until Cyber Monday. This year, I am staying home with my family, turning off the television and focusing on my many blessings. Please take a minute or several to reflect on your many blessings in the midst of the Black Friday chaos.

I am most thankful for the return of laughter and humor into my life. Before my child was diagnosed with a chronic illness and our lives were forever changed, laughter was something I took for granted. It was background noise in an already noisy house stuffed with pets, children and ensuing chaos. And then, my child got sick. Laughter was a luxury we didn't have time for in the midst of overwhelming fear and crisis management. It disappeared as if it had never been there at all.

But slowly as a flower unfurls and blooms in the springtime, laughter reappeared. I was hesitant to embrace it. I was afraid. I was worried that I was somehow being disrespectful to my child and her illness. Yet, my child was the one who embraced the laughter, the silliness. And so, laughter poured into our home again. It knocked down the walls, chased away most of the shadows, eased my weary soul.

I am thankful for laughter. May it always be the soundtrack of my home and yours!

Yours,

Crystal Intini Alperin

All of the bloggers at Parenting Without A Parachute wish you many blessings, health, love, laughter and peace today and always!

Here are what some of the other lovely bloggers at Parenting Without A Parachute are thankful for this holiday season:

Shari -

There are so many things that I am thankful for this holiday season. Everyday I count my blessings, as my life is good, happy, and drama free. My list is quite long so here are the top things that I am thankful for:

? Food on the table and a cozy, warm house.
? Friends and family that love, respect, and accept me for who I am.
? My husband who is wonderful everyday and doesn?t even know it.
? My son who is perfect and makes me laugh and my heart swell.

Elizabeth -

Sitting down at our Thanksgiving table, I have an overwhelming appreciation for those around me. As I take in the sight of the food and drink, a feast before our eyes, I realize many more people helped us prepare this meal. The farmers who grew the sweet potatoes, pumpkins and green beans. The vineyard owner who nurtured the grape which made the wine we are drinking. The silverware itself has seen over 50 turkeys! I encourage you to take in each savory bite today and heartily contribute to the conversation of the table. Blessings upon you and your family.

Jess? -

To say I am ?thankful? for what has happened over the past year seems like it would be a dramatic understatement, but for lack of a better word, I?ll use it.

I am thankful to have this adorable, growing baby bump, to have a home which I may or may not have the energy to vacuum, to have a husband who is always willing to step in and help when I am lacking the energy and most of all to have a support system of family friends standing tall for us every step of the way.

lijansharma: kudals: molina anvil: Reference and Education: Proper ...

Becoming an electrician starts with getting the right schooling. One can start quite early, even in High School. Many vocational programs in secondary schools have an electrical program. Following High School graduation, one can enter a program at a college to further their learning. Community colleges often have excellent trades program, including electrical. In addition to their typical general education courses like math and English, students will take practical courses where they learn both the science behind the trade and also get to apply and learn new skills in hands-on work. If one desires to learn more about the scientific end of things, they can attend a four year college that offers advanced programs like electrical engineering or similar majors. Community colleges are great because they offer students practical experience.

One can also do some extra work on their own to increase their skills and education. It is a great idea to find an experienced individual who works in the field and get close to them. An experienced worker can offer electrician training in the form of an apprenticeship or might be able to hire a student to work for them. They can also share the pros and cons of the industry, as well as stories from on the job. This will give the young student a better idea of what daily life is like as an electrical worker, and help them decide if this is really the field that they want to devote their life to. Working with a professional can help one meet others in the field and perhaps potential future customers. The pro may also have some suggestions for training programs or courses that the aspiring electrician can take advantage of. They can serve as a reference for the student's resume.

Before one can be successful in industry, they must have to proper education and training. Fortunately, budding electrical workers have many options to help them reach their goals and better themselves.

Luxembourg's Yves Mersch appointed to ECB Executive Board

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Luxembourg's Yves Mersch won a position on the European Central Bank's Executive Board on Friday after months of dispute with European Parliament legislators who objected to his appointment because of a lack of women in the bank's senior ranks.

European leaders meeting in Brussels approved the appointment of Mersch, who is currently the governor of Luxembourg's central bank. He will join the board on December 15 for an eight-year term, the European Council said in a statement.

"I am pleased with the positive outcome of a very long procedure," Mersch said in a statement.

Mersch's appointment had been held up by the European Parliament, which says member states have not tried hard enough to find suitable women for the position, and by Spain, which wants its own candidate.

Last month, lawmakers in the parliament rejected Mersch's candidacy to the board that forms the nucleus of the ECB's policymaking Governing Council.

Mersch said he had taken note of the critical voices from the European Parliament and that its rejection in October had mainly - but not only - been an "expression of concern that a great deal remains to be achieved on gender balance".

The decision by the council of EU member countries to press ahead regardless will strain relations with the European Parliament and could delay agreement on rules to boost bank capital reserves, in which the lawmakers have a say.

"Citizens across the EU have been astounded to discover the lack of gender diversity in the ECB, and indeed in other EU organizations," said Sharon Bowles, who chairs the European Parliament's influential economic and monetary affairs committee.

"Today's decision undermines and discredits work being undertaken to make the EU's economic governance system more democratically accountable," she said in a statement.

Martin Schulz, president of the European Parliament, struck a more muted tone in a speech he delivered to leaders.

"When key positions are filled in the future, we expect you to observe the principle of gender parity," he said.

Mersch pointed out the European Parliament had repeatedly confirmed his personal and professional competence. "Therefore, I am very confident that a constructive dialogue with the European Parliament will be pursued in the future," he added.

Mersch is an inflation-fighting hardliner whose views are close to those of the Bundesbank, the German central bank, which has lacked a close ally on the Executive Board since German Juergen Stark quit last year.

Spain, whose ECB Executive Board member Jose Manuel Gonzalez Paramo ended his term earlier this year, argued in favor of a woman taking the job and its Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said Madrid wanted a Spanish candidate for the post.

The controversy over Mersch's appointment has angered central bankers and policymakers who say the delay in filling the vacancy is causing practical problems.

Austria's Gertrude Tumpel-Gugerell and Sirkka Hamalainen of Finland are the only two women to have occupied posts on the ECB's Executive Board since it was set up in 1998. There are currently no women at the top of the central bank.

Curiosity result could confirm Mars life, says Levin

As space fans anticipate news of organic molecules from the Mars Curiosity rover ? cryptically teased by the mission's chief scientist, John Grotzinger, in a US radio interview ? there's one man who is even more excited than most.

Former NASA researcher Gilbert Levin says that a positive sign of organics by Curiosity would confirm his claim that NASA has already seen evidence for life on Mars ? from an experiment called Labeled Release that went to the Red Planet aboard the Viking mission.

If Curiosity has found evidence for organics, as many are hoping, "that removes the last barrier to my interpretation of the Labeled Release results, and leaves us free and clear", Levin told New Scientist.

Though the prospect of new Curiosity findings have set the internet abuzz, nobody from NASA has yet said publicly what they are: Grotzinger has refused to elaborate, pointing New Scientist, and other journalists, to a presentation scheduled for the American Geophysical Union annual meeting in San Francisco, which begins on 3 December.

'History books'

Grotzinger's key comment to US National Public Radio ? "this data is going to be one for the history books. It's looking really good" ? concerned an instrument called SAM, for sample analysis at Mars, which, among other things, is tasked with finding organic molecules in the Martian soil.

Ordinarily, finding organics on the surface would not count as evidence for life, nor would it be surprising, since such molecules are constantly raining down throughout the solar system in meteorites. But in the case of Mars, it's more complicated, says Levin.

That's because the failure to detect any organics at all by an instrument aboard the Viking lander was the counter-evidence that cancelled out an apparent detection of active biology by Levin's Labeled Release experiment. That experiment showed that radioactively labelled carbon from a nutrient solution added to the soil was released into the air in the test chamber ? an apparent sign of metabolism.

Though Levin has long argued otherwise, the consensus has been that Viking did not find evidence of life on Mars.

Caution urged

Levin acknowledges that, after more than three decades of argument over what the Viking results really mean, opinions are not likely to change overnight, no matter what the new Curiosity results may show. Although proving the presence of organics in the soil will "remove all rationale against" his interpretation, he says, "it's hard to change a paradigm". Most scientists are convinced that Viking's results were inconclusive. "I doubt this will change the consensus" he adds.

Chris McKay of the NASA Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California, is a leading researcher on the possibility of life on Mars, and he, too, urges caution. "This is probably not as exciting as the internet rumors suggest," he says ? as someone who is privy to what Curiosity has found.

Then again, McKay was never convinced that Viking failed to find organics. He has argued, in a peer-reviewed paper, that the Viking non-detection of organics was invalid, by demonstrating that soils from the Atacama desert in Chile, known to contain organics, showed no signs of them in a test that replicated the one on Viking.
