Welcome to the busy season for retailers! Aw? I can smell brand new junk everywhere! At work, I talk with retailers daily and boy are they ramping up for one of their busiest and most profitable days/weeks of the year. How exciting! You may even be tempted to get excited about the deals. And that?s why I?m here, to talk you out of going shopping this Friday. Perhaps these 20 arguments to stay home, or at least out of the stores, this Black Friday will get you to consider staying away and saving your dollars for something better:
1. Stay home this Black Friday because?. you don?t need what the stores are selling ? If you?re at home, I want to encourage you to do a quick exercise. Turn your head 90 degrees left. Pause for 5 seconds. Now turn it right. Pause for 5 more seconds. What are you seeing? If it?s not a comfy, cozy, clean, clutter free environment, you have too much stuff and don?t need more. Think about it, really. Do you need to add more junk to your home? Will that make it feel more like home? The answer is no.
2. Stay home this Black Friday because?. you don?t really want to spend money on junk ? Real quick, log into your Mint.com account and take a look at your account balances. Is your total debt anything greater than $0? If so, ask yourself whether you really want to spend money on junk this week instead of putting it toward your debt. Are your investment accounts large enough that you?re seeing a significant percentage of your living expenses trickle in each month as income? No? Perhaps you should ask yourself whether or not you REALLY want to spend money on junk this Black Friday instead of adding it to your investment account.
3. Stay home this Black Friday because?. the deals aren?t as good as you think they are ? Look, Black Friday is an INSANELY profitable day for retailers. How would that be possible if they were losing money on each thing they sold you? The truth is, it?s mainly marketing hype. Sure, they will be selling 10 TV?s at the deeply discounted rate, but when they are sold out, you will be paying regular or close to regular price. Stores will be making money off of you, therefore, you?re not getting a good deal and are instead paying ?retail?, hence they are in the business of ?retailing?.
4. Stay home this Black Friday because?. it?s the day after Thanksgiving and you can put up the Christmas tree ? In my family growing up, we always waited until the day after Thanksgiving to put up the Christmas tree. It was an exciting day and full of a lot of Christmas spirit. I loved spending that day with my mom. We played Christmas albums on mom?s old record player and had a great time. The family time and memories made on this day are worth so much more than a trip to a crowded shopping mall to fight over a bunch of junk you don?t need. Are you choosing to go shopping this Black Friday instead of spending quality time at home with your family? Is it really worth it?
5. Stay home this Black Friday because?. you can eat Thanksgiving leftovers instead of eating out -Chances are that if you?re out shopping the day away, then you?ll be eating out as well. This is another bunch of money down the drain while your turkey, stuffing, potatoes and gravy Thanksgiving leftovers spoil in your fridge back home. Don?t let all that good food go to waste because you?re out shopping and buying stuff you don?t need with money you really don?t want to spend.
6. Stay home this Black Friday because ? you have goals to achieve ? That?s right, as a reader of Young, Cheap Living, you have goals to achieve. How many days off do you get get in a year where there isn?t somewhere you need to be? Probably not many. Use this Black Friday to take a step forward in achieving a goal that?s important to you. Whether it?s getting out and going for a walk, run or bike ride, setting up your budget for next month or organizing your Mint.com account, you can use the day to make progress.
7. Stay home this Black Friday because ? you have new hobbies to get into or old hobbies to revisit ? Do you like to scrapbook, create works or art, craft, sew, knit, work on cars or build things? Spend this Friday getting back into a hobby that you don?t do anymore or get into a new hobby for the first time. And no, shopping does not qualify as a hobby.
8. Stay at home this Black Friday because?. grandpa, grandma, mom, dad, brother, sister, niece, nephew, grandson and/or granddaughter wants you around ? Stay around for your loved ones. Do what they love to do this Friday instead of heading off to the mall to get the latest high tech gadget. If your family is together this Thanksgiving, spend the day after doing something together as a family. It will mean a lot more to all of you.
9. Stay home this Black Friday because?. you?re on the path to becoming wealthy and this fits your plan ? Let?s be honest, you weren?t going to fall for those advertisements anyway. You?ve got your act together (you read this blog), so why even entertain an idea as crazy as going to the mall to give those retailers all of your hard earn cash. It?s just not happening and you know it. Sorry retailers? You?ll have to feed off of all those who don?t have a plan to get out of debt, save for their emergency fund, house or retirement. I think you?ll survive!
10. AND FINALLY, stay home this Black Friday because?. Cyber Monday is only 3 days later and then you can buy everything you want online instead ? Haha, just kidding. If you aren?t convinced by now to stay out of the stores this Friday, then forget it, go shopping and spend all kinds of your money!
