Phillip Phillips Makes American Idol History

Move over, Kelly Clarkson. Take a seat, Carrie Underwood. Continue to toil away in obscurity, Ruben Studdard.

Phillip Phillips has made history.

The Season 11 champion finished at number-two on the Digital Songs chart this week, as the single "Home" was downloaded 278,000 times, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Its the biggest sales week for any winner's coronation single since SoundScan began tracking downloads in 2003.

Moreover, it's the second-best digital sales week EVER for any American Idol contestant at any time, trailing only Clarkson's "My Life Would Suck Without You," which debuted with 280,000 downloads.

Phillips' achievement is also the fourth most impressive debut of 2012, placing behind Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend" (521,000), Maroon 5's "Payphone" featuring Wiz Khalifa (493,000) and Katy Perry's "Part of Me" (411,000).

The singer will soon be celebrating in a hospital bed, however. Once a high fever comes down, he is scheduled to undergo surgery in order to cure a kidney ailment. We wish him a speedy recovery!

Great Insurance Agent Review

sed poche Every year, more automobiles and drivers travel the highways. With so many vehicles on the road, crashes will happen. The difference between a small aggravation and major pain can be automobile insurance. But why do you need insurance and just how much should you buy? Coverage requirements vary by state/province but usually include the following: Pays for damages due to bodily injury and property damage to others for which you are responsible. Bodily injury damages include medical expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering. Property damage includes damaged property and loss of use of property. It also covers your defense and court costs if you are sued. Higher recommended insurances are available that cover more than the lower, state-mandated insurance. Personal injury protection: This is required in some states and is optional in others. It pays you or your passengers for medical treatment resulting from a crash, regardless of who may have been at fault, and is often called no-fault coverage. It may also pay for lost earnings, replacement of services and funeral expenses. State law usually sets minimum amounts. Medical payments: This coverage is available states that are not considered no-fault; it pays despite who may have been at fault. It pays for an insured person?s reasonable and necessary medical or funeral expenses for bodily injury from an accident. Collision: Pays for damage to your car caused by an accident. Comprehensive: This applies if your car is stolen or damaged by causes other than collision, including fire, wind, hail, flood or vandalism. Uninsured motorist: Pays for damages when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have liability insurance or by a person who cannot be identified (usually a hit-and-run driver). Under-insured motorist: Pays for damages when an insured person is injured in a crash caused by another person who does not have enough liability insurance to cover the full amount of the damages. Other coverage, such as emergency road service and car rental, is also available.Your auto insurance payments vary by company and will depend on several factors, including: *Your selected coverage *Your vehicle?s make and model * Your driving record * Your age, sex and marital status and * Where you live Some have come to think of auto insurance as a necessary evil, but it can truly rescue your economic health Evaluate your needs, research your options and with the guidance of your insurance agent choose the option that best suits you. great insurance agents

Violent Arab ghetto shows Israel's seamy underside

LOD, Israel (Reuters) - "My friend is on the floor, dying, 11 holes in his body, and I only have 10 fingers," raps Tamer Nafar. "Don't close your eyes, blink if you can hear me."

Nafar isn't rapping about violence and crime in urban America, but murders, drugs, guns and gang warfare in his own Israeli slum.

The backstreets of Lod, a mixed Arab-Jewish city just 20 minutes from the tree-lined boulevards of Tel Aviv, reveal a seamy underside of Israel that few visitors get to see, tucked away behind Ben Gurion airport off the main highway to Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank.

"There's crime pollution in this city that hits everybody. Nobody has immunity," said Nafar, lead MC in the Arab group DAM.

Residents, police, government officials, academics and social workers agree conditions in the areas where Arabs live have reached a crisis point, with poor schools and infrastructure fuelling crime and drug abuse.

Arab residents and analysts say that Israel's government and the police have ignored the problem because it has stayed within the Arab community and the country's Jewish population is largely unaffected.

But awareness is growing, partly thanks to wider public appeals from the communities themselves.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told a special Knesset meeting in mid-February organized by Arab parliamentarian Ahmed Tibi that statistics showing that 40 percent of Arab Israelis felt threatened were "intolerable".

"?The lives of Israeli Arabs are insufferable as a result of crime, murder, the killing of women, murder in general, robbery and looting," Netanyahu said.

POVERTY

Out of a total population of 7.8 million in Israel, 1.6 million - 20 percent - are Arabs. Many live in Nazareth and Arab villages located mostly in the north of Israel and in so-called mixed cities such Acre, Lod, Ramle, Haifa and Jaffa.

Most are descendants of Palestinians who stayed on after the 1948 war to establish Israel in which hundreds of thousands of Palestinians fled or were driven out. Many Arabs feel kinship with Palestinians in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, and Jewish rightwingers say many Arabs are disloyal to the state.

Most Arabs are exempt from service in Israel's conscript military forces, which is compulsory for Jews, and they are barely integrated into the local economy.

The government estimates that just over 50 percent of Arab families live under the poverty line.

Truly mixed Jewish-Arab neighborhoods are increasingly hard to find as Jews, often with government support, move out to more affluent neighborhoods, creating Arab ghettoes and exacerbating the feeling among Arabs that they are second-class citizens.

Dor Shaulov, a project manager at City Without Violence, a government-funded initiative aimed at reducing violence in urban areas, said Arabs tend to be in favor of mixed communities while Jews preferred to stay separate.

"When Arabs start to move in a Jewish neighborhood, the Jews start to move out," Shaulov said.

Residents in the Arab areas complain of inferior municipal services, higher unemployment rates, crowded neighborhoods, inferior health care and unfair allocation of resources in the education system and housing.

"Since 1948, there has not been one governmental housing plan in the Arab neighborhoods of Lod ... even though there have been hundreds of plans for Jews," said Faten Zinati, a municipal government employee who works in Lod.

As a result, she explains, Arabs have been forced to build homes without permits, many of which have been demolished, and the rest are under threat of demolition.

The result is that today, "the Arab neighborhoods are neglected, dirty and disordered," she said.

WHERE ARE THE POLICE?

Out of 141 murders last year in Israel, 62 were committed in the Arab sector, according to the latest figures cited by Public Security Minister Yitzhak Aharonovich in the Knesset.

Thirty percent of the prison population is Arab, and 68 percent of all gunfire incidents involve Arabs, he said.

In Lod, where about a third of the population is Arab, most crime involves Arabs against Arabs. Residents and observers say lack of adequate policing in Arab areas is a big part of the problem.

"The majority of the drug dealers are Arabs stationed in the Arab parts of the city, and the violent crime victims are mostly Arab too," said Mahmoud Mohareb, a professor of Israeli studies at Al Quds University.

"There is no police seriousness when it comes to investigating crimes committed between Arabs," Mohareb said.

Police defend their record and point to success in cleaning up the drugs scene. They reckon up to 1,500 drug users a day bought narcotics in Lod's Arab "Mahata" neighborhood two years ago using "ATM's" -- holes in the walls that supplied heroin and crack cocaine -- a trade that is almost nonexistent today.

"It was like a market place, but for drugs and drug users," said resident Amer Zawarkeh.

Violence continues, the police agree, but they say the problem is due to "tribalism" in the communities. A third of Lod's Arab population are tribal bedoins, who began migrating to the city in the 1950s in search of work.

Israel's Police Commissioner, Yohanan ?Danino, agreed the rate of crime solving in the Arab community is low and needed to be improved. More Arabic-speaking officers is one solution, but he said getting the full cooperation of the Arab community would be key.

HOUSING PERMITS

Crammed into decrepit tenement-style flats, many homes in the Arab parts remain under threat of demolition. A study by the Israeli rights group Shatil estimates that some 70 percent of Arab homes in Lod lack legal permits, which are hard to obtain.

In their neighborhoods, the streets have no names, the houses have no numbers and GPS tracking systems go blank. There are no paved roads and rubbish is strewn everywhere.

Municipal services such as street lighting and rubbish collection stop at the boundaries of their quarters.

"The only way to fix this neighborhood is to destroy it entirely and let us build new houses, with permits," said resident Zawarkeh.

In March 2011, Human Rights Watch put out a report called "Israel: Stop Discriminatory Home Demolitions" in which the group criticized the practice of demolishing homes in Arab communities built without permits when getting permits was so hard.

"When it comes to housing rights in Lod, Israeli officials seem to have one rule for Palestinian citizens, another for Jewish citizens," Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch, said in a statement.

Israel's government has earmarked about 172 million shekels ($46 million) for a number of improvement schemes. But Netanyahu and his cabinet argue local policing, housing and infrastructure are just part of the overall problem.

The Knesset meeting on the problem was a landmark event, participants said.

"This is the first time that the Arab sector has cried out for help and wants the police to enter the towns and cities," Netanyahu said at the meeting. "Arab MKs (members of Knesset) have told me: 'we are in distress'."

?"The principal solution is the integration of Israeli Arabs in the economy and education," he said. "Simultaneously, action needs to be taken in the field of law enforcement."

City Without Violence's Shaulov says that in Lod, unlike other cities in his scheme, even small changes such as picking up the trash in Mahata neighborhood made a big impression. Locals were awed by the installation of street lighting in a district that for years was pitch black at night.

"There was an inequality in the allotment of funding," Shaulov said. "Now, we aim to spend more on the Arab side in order to make up for the past.

"It's horrible now, but it was a disaster before."

The Importance of Fanatical Support for a Company's Marketing and ...

This is a Guest Post by Lindsey from ProfessionalIntern.com.

Competition in the marketplace -- for nearly any product or service -- is fierce in the modern world. For companies to have a chance at surviving in either a saturated or a struggling marketplace, it's important to have a solid plan in marketing and branding. Finding just the right niche can make or break a company brimming with potential.

Large companies, particularly those in ecommerce, are coming to terms with this reality, as far as the premium placed on customer service, in terms of reaching a virtual customer in a way that simulates a real life experience.

Regardless of how attached we are to our virtual world, customer want to feel humanized while making transactions.

When taking a look at large ecommerce-based companies, a common theme begins to take shape when noting their philosophies. Such ideas as creating and maintaining a sense of a personable brand with customers, ensuring that the customer does not have to jump through hoops to find answers or receive help, going above and the beyond the fundamentals in service, transmitting a sense of enthusiasm and caring and are always on the lookout for ways to innovate and integrate new philosophies, policies and actions to create a company in which customers will visit knowing they will receive the best in quality products and unparalleled service in a given market.

Many other companies are coming on board this exciting philosophy that breeds a sense of ownership of the company where customers are delighted to share their positive experience with friends and families, help to spread the word; all of this making ecommerce companies' jobs much simpler.

One company that has hit the ball and has knocked it out of the park on this front is Rackspace, a cloud company that offers hosting solutions, cloud solutions, managed hosting and much more. The company's branding philosophy and commitment to it directly affects its clients' customer base too so it?s key to ensure that everyone understands the commitment to fanatical support, which is a full-on commitment to 24/7 customer service.

The company, based in Austin, Texas, has its eyes open to the vast array of options to ecommerce companies and that it has to continually prove itself through quality hosting services to begin with, but just as importantly, it knows it has to stand behind its services and be available to meet customer's needs. With a large percentage of its client base being members of the Fortune 500 list, it?s clear to see their two-pronged approach in the Web hosting world is making great strides and achieving great success in satisfying its stellar client base.

With Rackspace's tagline, the massive company lays its philosophy on the line by stating that their Fanatical Support Promise has no excuses, no exceptions, as the company's customer service representatives provide customers with immediate support at any time of the day or night. The single most important drive of the Rackers (their employees), and Rackspace, is the sole commitment and ambition to ensure customer's absolute satisfaction.

With the primary goal of this company being to make sure everything runs smoothly, the reality is that sometimes things go wrong. It's what any give company does to correct a problem that matters most to customers, and this company is committed to attacking problems head on, securing a solution and assuring the customer that they will not need to worry about that particular problem ever again. The Rackers are responsive, accept responsibility, are resourceful, offer expertise and are transparent in their dealings with each and every customer with whom they have contact.

This model is ideal in the modern marketplace to help make a mark with excellence in marketing and branding. It takes time and commitment for any company to create such a model and build onto it, refining and working out the kinks, but they usually find that, as they go along, they continue to add to their strong customer base. Companies may do well to warm to the idea of enthusiastic customer support and going above and beyond to maintain a happy customer base. Related Posts with Thumbnails

Facebook shares plumb new depths, valuation questioned

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Facebook Inc shares slid below $29 to a new low on Tuesday as nervous investors fled the company's shares, concerned about the social network's long-term business prospects and an initial offering price that proved too rich.

Shares of the No. 1 social network fell 10 percent to an all-time low of $28.65, before closing at $28.84, or down 9.6 percent. Since its market debut at $38 on May 18, the eight-year-old company has shed approximately $25 billion in value - roughly equivalent to the market capitalization of Morgan Stanley, the lead underwriter of Facebook's IPO.

Wall Street has harbored concerns that Facebook, while boasting nearly a billion users worldwide and dominating Internet social-networking, would have difficulty translating its growing presence on smartphones and other mobile devices into revenue. Rivals Google Inc and Apple Inc currently dominate the mobile arena.

Facebook's quest to monetize mobile is spurring widespread speculation over its next moves. Technology bankers say the company would benefit from tacking on mobile operating software through an acquisition of Norway's Opera, which has been on the auction block for a while.

The New York Times cited sources dredging up a longstanding rumor that Zuckerberg was pondering building a Facebook phone, and that an easy way to acquire the hardware expertise needed was to buy troubled Research in Motion.

The Blackberry maker said late on Tuesday that it hired J.P. Morgan and RBC Capital Markets to help the company and its board with a "strategic review.

"They are clearly looking at smartphones and are trying to become more vertically integrated with their users," said Ryan Jacob of the Jacob Internet Fund. "They just don't want to be another app on Google's or Apple's platform."

"Speculation that Facebook is dabbling outside their main expertise and possibly planning another large acquisition may be unsettling to some investors," he added. "But I think options trading is behind today's drop in the shares."

TEMPTING OPTION

Facebook options began trading on Tuesday, presenting a tempting target as more investors bet the underlying stock would head south. They piled into put and call options - granting investors the right to sell or buy stock at a certain price - marking one of the busiest debuts ever in the options market.

"The fact that the stock has been weak on the first day of options trading means people are betting on future declines or buying insurance," Jacob said. "Investors may want to hold the stock but are buying protection in case the price falls further."

Jacob said he did not buy Facebook shares in the IPO and has not bought the stock since the debut.

"If the price is right we would consider buying," he added. "It's not quite there yet."

Janet Tavakoli, president of Tavakoli Structured Finance Inc in Chicago, said she bought puts expiring in September with a strike price of $25, at a cost of $210 per contract, with each contract representing 100 shares.

"The valuation is a complete bluff. There is still a long way to go down from here," she said. "There will be insiders selling their shares on August 20, when the first lockout period is over. There will be a lot of shares that will hit the market and more in coming months."

'TRANSITION'

Analysts say apart from the challenge of earning money off smartphone and tablet users, Facebook - which relies on advertising for the majority of its revenue --may also find it difficult to lure and keep large advertisers.

Days before Facebook's debut, General Motors announced it was pulling out of paid advertising on the social network, citing Facebook's unproven track record and echoing potential concerns about the lack of evidence that advertising on Facebook yielded strong returns on investment.

"Facebook is in a transition in their business model," Walter Price, portfolio manager of the Wells Fargo Advantage Specialized Technology Fund, told Reuters Insider. "It was easy to get the first 5 to 10 percent of an advertising budget to try it on Facebook and do some brand advertising, but getting the next 5 to 10 percent, you've got to displace TV and that's a lot more difficult to do.

"Facebook still doesn't have the metrics to prove profitability and prove growth and awareness from their platform," he added.

Facebook debut after an IPO that raised $16 billion was to have been the culmination of years of breakneck growth for the cultural and Internet phenomenon. But a software error on Nasdaq OMX Group Inc's U.S. exchange delayed the start of trade by 30 minutes.

Then, claims of selective disclosure in the days leading up to the IPO about Facebook's slowing revenue growth engulfed the company in controversy, as did perceptions among some investors that the stock had been overpriced coming out the gate.

Skeptics had argued even before the botched debut and subsequent selloff that Facebook's starting valuation of more than $100 billion - about equivalent to that of Amazon.com Inc and exceeding that of Hewlett-Packard Co and Dell Inc combined - was too high for a company that posted $1 billion in profit on revenue of $3.7 billion in 2011.

Facebook stock debuted at over 100 times historical earnings versus Apple's 14 times. Despite that, many investors bet on a modest first-day pop for the company, which upended traditional technology and business models and is used by about one in seven people on the planet.

"We've been talking about a $50 billion valuation as one that makes sense, I think that would be a stock price around $20," Price said. But "the infrastructure that Facebook is building, and the fact that they have many advertisers that have built followers and fans on their platform, gives them a base to build a great business."

WHAT'S NEXT?

Vague talk about Facebook's next moves in a hotly contested mobile arena may also be giving some investors pause. Rumors that the company may be considering acquiring Opera pushed the Oslo-listed shares up more than 26 percent on Tuesday.

Analysts say the mobile-phone software maker could prove a crucial component in Facebook's still-patchy strategy to earn revenue from smartphones, but it could carry a price tag of as high as $1 billion.

Many Wall Street analysts had also been concerned about the apparent hastiness with which Facebook concluded its $1 billion purchase of photo-sharing service Instagram, though Zuckerberg later said it had been considered for months.

A industry source told Reuters on Tuesday that antitrust regulators had given Facebook notice that its proposed Instagram acquisition will get an extended review.

Speculation has been rife about how Facebook might spearhead a drive into mobile advertising, in which its Instagram purchase was considered key.

Talk that the social networking company might actually get into the hardware business re-surfaced after Google, whose Android OS is now the most commonly used mobile software, completed its acquisition of Motorola Mobility.

Bankers and analysts say BlackBerry maker RIM, left behind in the smartphone race against Apple and Samsung, might be doing shareholders a service by allowing itself to be acquired.

Others worry about how Zuckerberg commands more than half of the company's voting shares through agreements with other investors, granting him near-absolute control over Facebook.

The 28-year-old has so far refrained from commenting publicly about the controversy, and in fact is reportedly not even in the country.

As Facebook shares hit a record low on Tuesday, photos of Zuckerberg and his new bride spread across the Internet, depicting the couple - who wed the day after Facebook debuted - touring the Sistine Chapel and sharing a fast-food meal on their honeymoon in Rome.

Sports fever comes to chemistry

Caroline Morley, online picture researcher

It feels like there's no escaping sports fever this summer. A certain five-ringed logo even inspired chemists to create this new molecule.

Called olympicene, this molecule is related to graphene and is based around five hexagonal carbon rings. The structure was entered into the online chemical database ChemSpider two years ago, but only now have David Fox and Anish Mistry of the University of Warwick, UK, brought the molecule into physical reality.

Fox commented that olympicene could have interesting optical and electronic properties and applications, along with other graphene-related molecules. He said: "These types of molecules may offer great potential for the next generation of solar cells and high-tech lighting sources such as LEDs."

This image was taken using non-contact atomic-force microscopy at IBM Research in Zurich, Switzerland.

At just 1.2 nanometres in width, olympicene is the smallest set of five rings you're likely to see this summer, but it is unlikely to win any medals. Let's hope it escapes the branding police.

Ecotality sues to stop NRG electric charging network in California

NRG Energy?s eVgo Network at a Best Buy

Electric car charging company Ecotality has filed a lawsuit against California regulators to attempt to halt a deal that includes power company NRG investing around $100 million into building an electric car charging network in California, reports the San Jose Mercury News, and we?ve confirmed with Ecotality. There were a lot of angry people in the electric vehicle charging community after the NRG deal was announced, and I was wondering if someone was going to sue.

Here?s the back story: in March California Governor Jerry Brown, and California?s utility regulator, announced that a decade-old claim with a partner of NRG Energy, Dynegy, over power contracts during the state?s energy crisis, would turn into a $120 million settlement fund to invest in building out an electric car charging network in California. One hundred million dollars of the fund would be allocated for installing 200 public fast-charging stations, and 10,000 plug-in units at 1,000 locations across the Bay Area, San Joaquin Valley, L.A. and San Diego County. The remaining $20 million of the fund will go to ?ratepayer relief,? or reducing consumer energy bills.

Doesn?t sound so bad, right? Well, it does to NRG?s competitors that don?t see why the power company is settling a claim by essentially winning a $100 million investment deal.

Dynegy had an Enron-style energy trading platform and was one of the companies that was involved in California?s energy crisis. A subsidiary of Dynegy, was a co-owner with NRG of power generating plants, which are currently owned by NRG in California and ?NRG assumed full responsibility for resolving this matter in 2006 when NRG acquired Dynegy?s 50 percent interest in the assets.?

Ecotality is holding a call shortly to discuss their position, so I?ll update this post when I know more.

Ecotality execs said on the call:

We are looking to stop an illegal giveaway that would create a monopoly over electric vehicle charging in California. They are illegally trying to give away a monopoly to an out of state company. Our motion to stop this in April was dismissed. We?re asking the court to review this deal under a transparent process. We believe we have a compelling position on this. We hope that we will get the necessary support on this from the industry.

and

Ecotality is focused on California. We?re putting out the charger infrastructure already. The NRG deal was consulted behind closed doors and no one in the industry was consulted about it. The deal gives them a huge advantage over others that are investing investor money, not settlement money. They can literally saturate the market and cherry pick the best real estate.

Ecotality also says it has lost three locations for DC fast chargers and have seen stalls on many more.

Energy and Security in South Asia: Cooperation or Conflict?

Home to nearly one-third of the world?s population, impressive economic growth, and two nuclear-armed states, South Asia is a region that can ill afford more turmoil, which is why the looming energy crisis facing the region has such massive implications. Energy demand is growing at an astounding rate. However, energy supply has been unable to keep up because of limited domestic resources, institutional?government and regulatory?shortcomings, subsidized energy prices, and a lack of investment in desperately needed energy infrastructure. Meanwhile, nearly 600 million people in the region lack access to electricity and it remains one of the most vulnerable regions to the impacts of a changing climate. In his latest book, Energy and Security in South Asia: Cooperation or Conflict? (Brookings Press, 2011), Senior Fellow Charles Ebinger argues the region needs to address its energy shortcomings with bold decisions if it is to capitalize on the economic opportunities before it.

On November 2, the Energy Security Initiative hosted the launch of Energy and Security in South Asia: Cooperation or Conflict? Ebinger presented his findings and recommendations, arguing that many reforms?from pricing and institutional reforms to investment in infrastructure?can be made domestically, but that these will be insufficient in the long run if the governments of the region cannot cooperate on energy trade. Following his remarks, Brookings Senior Fellow Stephen Cohen and Ron Somers, president of the U.S.-India Business Council, joined the discussion. Vice President Martin Indyk, director of Foreign Policy at Brookings, provided introductory remarks.

After the discussion, panelists?took audience questions.

Dealing with Difficult People is Difficult ? | City Connect

Or should it perhaps be ?dealing with people is difficult?? As Neil Donald said in his Conversations With God, relationships are the biggest challenge that life presents us with. It takes time and effort to keep a healthy relationship and sometimes even the best efforts are not enough. Dealing with people equals relating to them which means building a relationship of some sort.

Relationships, like most things in life, are made of respect, responsibility, agreements, considerations etcetera; all of these fall into one big basket called Communication. The level of respect we feel a person is giving us is dictated by their communication, whether that?s verbal or non-verbal, with us. The level of responsibility they take or give to us is suggested by communication. We agree to things through communication and the whole relationship cannot function without communication.

The reason why this is stressed so greatly is simple: dealing with people means dealing with relationships, being in a relationship with someone must happen through communication and thus it would be useless to even attempt to deal with difficult people if we do not deal with the level of communication between them and us.

Often difficult relationships, situations and outcomes are nothing more than the result of poor communication; change the way you communicate and the response that you will receive will change too. This does not mean your words, not only words at least. Paralanguage, or non-verbal communication, represents more than 80% of the message we send across; when my wife looks at me saying ?Luca Senatore!!!? after I have let my son eat Nutella, I know she is not just calling my name! Ever heard a friend calling another friend with a rather offensive name which, with a smile and a different tonality, becomes a compliment?

Communication is the most powerful interaction tool we have and yet, many of us do not know how to use it. This is the very core of dealing with difficult people; difficult people do not know how to use communication to express their needs/requirements/preferences. Difficult people are difficult because we do not like, rightly so, their way of communicating; they are only different to us, even if ?us? means the rest of the world. Difficult people are not difficult to themselves; most of the times they would not think that they are being difficult which makes the whole thing even more difficult right?

So how can we deal with difficult people?

Easy, through communication! Whilst every situation is unique and needs to be analysed individually, the following tips may reveal themselves magical if you apply them rigorously. You must remember that there are different kinds of difficult people: the grumpy ones, the ?I know better? ones, the lazy ones, the rude ones, the nosy ones, the ?Everything is bad? ones, the ?You have no rights over me? ones and the list goes on and on and on.

Whilst the specific process of dealing with them may vary and there might be several techniques available for you to do so, the core is always the same: Force them to change the way they communicate! That?s right; this is the one key to dealing with different people easily and quickly. If you are dealing with a grumpy person, you must elicit in him or her, a non-grumpy communication. If you are dealing with a lazy one, then you must elicit a non-lazy communication. What this means in practical terms is that you must persuade the person to snap out of the old, unproductive state of mind and get into a more productive one.

So how do you do that? Easy? Ask! That?s right, if you ask questions people must think. When you talk to people often they drift off thinking about something else. The mind can think up to 7000 times faster that our mouth can talk and so whilst you say one think they could be busy processing 7000 other things. When I teach sales techniques I often tell my student to follow the TTT approach. The TTT approach is Tell them what you are going to tell them, Tell them and Told them what you have told them. This is because generally, during a typical 60 minute conversation, people will only take in 40% of what you have said. The rest will be forgotten.

You can alter this by asking questions. When you ask questions people have to think before they can give you an answer and this keeps them hooked and focused on what you are saying. Whilst in sales we want to ask questions to influence the way people feel about our product or service, when dealing with difficult people our aim is that of influencing our ?receiver? to think in a different way from their usual negative one. So to a grumpy man who we need to complete a project by the end of the week we may ask: ?I have a problem Mr Grumpy: I have a challenging situation and I don?t know if this project can be completed by the end of the week, do you think you might be able help me find a solution?? or ?I don?t know whether this can be done by the end of the week, what do you think Mr Grumpy??. Things like these force us to think. They require rationality, analysis and focus which soften the edge of emotions and also they make the person feel responsible, and therefore capable, worthy and respected, for an evaluation. This might elicit the wish to help, which is a common human need, from Mr Grumpy.

So you have asked Mr Grumpy to give you something proactive and positive, ?forcing? him to change they thinking pattern. The same concept can be applied to other ?difficult? personality traits, simply ask questions which are specific and can lead the ?receiver? to the opposite state of mind.

Whilst there are hundreds of good techniques to deal with difficult people, the above will help you a great deal if applied and so, as I often say and yet not often enough, take Action and use what you know.

Google Search App for iPhone, iPad

Google today (May 23) launched an updated version of its search app for iPhone and iPad.

?

What? You?re still launching Google searches from Safari? Sure, you?ll get the same search results because Google is the default search engine in Safari, but the standalone search app offers some pretty neat tricks.

?

At launch, you have three ways to search ? old-fashioned typing, using your voice or?camera?by using Google Goggles, which finds search results based on image matching. Goggles (Google?s app, not its recently debuted?high-tech eyewear?) is best used for identifying landmarks. You must turn on Voice Search and Google Goggles in your settings after signing into your Google account.

?

You can swipe back and forth between your search results and a single Web page. You can also use Google?s preview for search results instead of the typical list view. Preview allows you to tap the side-by-side page icon in the upper right corner and get a series of large pages that you can swipe through. Finding text within a Web page is a snap as well ? tap the magnifying glass on the bottom (iPhone) or top?(iPad?)?menu. Type in your term and each instance will be highlighted for you.

?

Unfortunately, Google?s redesigned search app missed an opportunity to bring real multitasking to iOS. Say you?ve launched?Gmail??from the App screen and now want to check Reader for news. When you open Reader, it replaces Gmail on the open tab ? you have to use the forward and back arrows to navigate, loading the same tab each time. Opening more than one Web page from search results could also prove handy.

?

Google Search is available for free in the Apple?App Store.?

rotherham business news: News: Relief for Rotherham manufacturers

A free seminar is taking place in Rotherham next week to help local manufacturers take up tax relief in the form of tax credits for companies involved in research and development.

The Government is committed to increasing R&D tax relief for SMEs to 225% of qualifying expenditure from April 2012 and 130% relief is available for larger companies.

Experts in audit, tax, and corporate finance, Deloitte has joined together with the Advanced Manufacturing Park (AMP) to provide a free seminar at the AMP Technology Centre in Rotherham on the morning of May 30.

The event includes an overview of the R&D tax credits scheme and its application to manufacturers, highlighting HMRC?s current thinking in this area, the pitfalls that may trip up claimants and exploring the proposed modifications likely to be introduced under the 2013 Finance Bill.

Optimising R&D tax rate relief claims within the manufacturing sector often means looking at activities undertaken beyond any core technical team. The Deloitte R&D tax services team has assisted in the preparation and agreement of thousands of R&D claims, many of which include costs associated with R&D carried out in the manufacturing / production environment. The Deloitte team will explain some of their experiences in this area during the event.

Following the seminar, Deloitte will host a drop-in clinic for attendees, allowing company representatives to share details of potential projects in an initial free 30min consultation, and make initial assessment on the viability of making a claim.

(AP) ? The world's first private supply ship flew tantalizingly close to the International Space Station on Thursday, acing a critical test in advance of the actual docking.

The unmanned SpaceX Dragon capsule flew within 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) of the orbiting lab as it performed a practice lap and checkout of its communication and navigation systems.

Officials at NASA and the SpaceX company declared the rendezvous a success and said the historic linkup is on track for Friday.

It is the first U.S. vessel to visit the space station since NASA's shuttles retired last summer ? and the first private spacecraft to ever attempt a delivery. The Dragon is carrying 1,000 pounds (453.6 kilograms) of provisions.

Thursday's accomplishment "is a big confidence boost. Everyone's very excited," said SpaceX mission director John Couluris. After working all night and into the wee hours, he urged his team to go home and rest up for Friday. "It's exciting to be an American and part of putting American spacecraft into orbit, and we're very proud right now."

NASA flight director Holly Ridings said the mood is upbeat on her side as well, but noted "there's still a lot of really new things that the teams need to perform and the vehicles, frankly, need to perform" on Friday.

"This is still definitely a demonstration flight," she said at a news briefing.

As the pre-dawn hours of Thursday unfolded, the space station astronauts struggled with bad computer monitors and camera trouble as the Dragon zoomed toward them, but the problem did not hold up the operation. Indeed, all of the tests appeared to go well.

The astronauts successfully turned on Dragon's strobe light by remote control, but could not see it because of the sun glare and distance of several miles. The Dragon finally popped into camera view about 10 minutes later, appearing as a bright speck of light against the blackness of space, near the Earth's blue horizon. The two solar wings were clearly visible as the Dragon drew closer.

"Can nicely see the vehicle," Dutch spaceman Andre Kuipers said.

SpaceX's near-term objective is to help stockpile the space station, joining Russia, Europe and Japan in resupply duties. In three or four more years, however, the company run by the billionaire who co-founded PayPal, Elon Musk, hopes to be launching station astronauts.

It is the cornerstone of President Barack Obama's strategy for NASA: turning over orbital flights to private business so the space agency can concentrate on destinations farther afield, like asteroids and Mars. Several U.S. companies are vying for the opportunity.

Obama called Musk on Wednesday, a day after Dragon's flawless launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida, aboard the company's Falcon 9 rocket.

"The President just called to say congrats. Caller ID was blocked, so at first I thought it was a telemarketer," Musk said via Twitter early Thursday. He ended his tweet with a smiley emoticon.

Musk monitored Thursday's operation from the SpaceX Mission Control in Hawthorne, California, where the company is based.

On Friday morning, two of the space station's six astronauts, Kuipers and Donald Pettit, will use the space station's robot arm to grab the Dragon and attach it to the complex. The crew will have just under a week to unload the contents before releasing the spacecraft for re-entry next Thursday. It is the only supply ship designed to return to Earth with experiments and equipment; the others burn up in the atmosphere.

SpaceX wants to provide regular service at much faster flight rates than the government-sponsored cargo ships, Couluris said. Two more supply trips are planned by year's end.

The space shuttles used to be the primary means of getting things to and from the space station. Shuttle Discovery is now a museum relic, with Endeavour and Atlantis soon to follow.

Aboard the bell-shaped Dragon is food, clothes, batteries and other space station gear.

The space station and Dragon may be visible to Earthlings in select locations in the pre-dawn hours Friday, while flying tandem just prior to their linkup 250 miles (400 kilometers) above the planet. Among the many U.S. cities with viewing opportunities if skies are clear: New York, Los Angeles, Washington, Chicago and Jacksonville, Florida.

National Registry adds Summer, Prince tunes

By Mike Barnes, The Hollywood Reporter

Six days after her death, Donna Summer?s futuristic techno hit ?I Feel Love? has been selected for induction into the National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress, it was announced Tuesday.

Marking the 10th anniversary of the registry, Librarian of Congress James H. Billington selected Summer?s 1977 hit song and 24 other sound recordings to be preserved as cultural, artistic and/or historical treasures for generations.

PHOTOS: 10 Musicians who crossed over to movies

Also among this year?s class of inductees are Dolly Parton?s autobiographical ?Coat of Many Colors? from 1971; Prince and the Revolution?s soundtrack to "Purple Rain"; Leonard Bernstein?s debut performance with the New York Philharmonic in 1943; the 1912 ?Come Down Ma Evenin? Star,? the only surviving recording of Lillian Russell, one of the greatest stars of the American musical stage; a 1977 concert recording from The Grateful Dead; an album from TV?s "A Charlie Brown Christmas"; and the pioneering 1979 hip-hop classic ?Rapper?s Delight? from The Sugarhill Gang.

The selections span the years 1888 to 1984 and bring the total number of recordings to 350.

Summer, the disco queen who died May 17 at age 63, recorded ?I Feel Love? for release in summer 1977 on Casablanca Records. With its synthesized backing track and Summer?s ?breathy and ethereal vocal,? as the Library of Congress describes it, the song reached No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 and quickly became popular in gay dance clubs across the world.

PHOTOS: "Glee" pays tribute to the King of Pop Michael Jackson

Under the terms of the National Recording Preservation Act of 2000, the Librarian, with advice from the Library?s National Recording Preservation Board, is given the task each year of selecting 25 recordings at least 10 years old that are ?culturally, historically or aesthetically significant.?

?America?s sound heritage is an important part of the nation?s history and culture, and this year?s selections reflect the diversity and creativity of the American experience,? said Billington. ?These songs, words and natural sounds must be preserved.?

The recordings are housed in the Library?s state-of-the-art Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation in Culpeper, Va. Nominations are gathered through online submissions from the public and from the NRPB, which comprises leaders in the fields of music, recorded sound and preservation.

Here?s a look at the latest 25 inducted works (listed in chronological order), with descriptions supplied by the Library of Congress:

Edison Talking Doll cylinder (1888)
Few, if any, sound recordings can lay claim to as many ?firsts? as the small, mangled artifact of a failed business venture discovered in 1967 in the desk of an assistant to Thomas Edison. This cylinder recording, only five-eighths of an inch wide, represents the foundation of many aspects of recording history. It was created in 1888 by a short-lived Edison company established to make talking dolls for children, and it is the only surviving example from the experimental stage of the Edison doll production when the cylinders were made of tin. As such, this recording of ?Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,? as sung by an anonymous Edison employee, is the earliest-known commercial sound recording in existence. It also is the first children?s recording and, quite possibly, the first recording to be made by someone paid to perform for a sound recording. Due to its poor condition, the recording was considered unplayable until 2011, when its surface was scanned in three dimensions using digital mapping tools created at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and developed in collaboration with the Library of Congress.

?Come Down Ma Evenin? Star,? Lillian Russell (1912)
This is the only surviving recording of Russell, a versatile performer at home in operetta, burlesque and vaudeville whose personal life often generated as much publicity as her performances. Born in 1861, she was a star before movies and recordings, which in their early days could not do justice to her famous beauty, voice, style and stage presence. ?Come Down? was her signature song; she introduced it in the 1902 burlesque review "Twirly-Whirly," parodying the nouveau-riche society figure she had become, but she invested it with a poignancy that reflected its troubled history. Russell?s former music director John Stromberg wrote the song and hours after finishing it committed suicide because of the pain of chronic, untreatable rheumatism. Russell recorded the tune in 1912, but it was not released. In 1943, rare record dealer Jack L. Caidin found a lone test pressing of ?Come Down Ma Evenin? Star,? inscribed by Russell herself, and released it on his own specialty label, providing a brief echo of the Russell phenomenon.

?Ten Cents a Dance,? Ruth Etting (1930)
Etting was one of the first great singers of the electrical era of recording, the period after the mid-1920s when the microphone replaced the acoustic recording horn. As with the best of the male crooners of the period, Etting?s vocal delivery was artfully understated and personal. In the words of popular music writers Phil Hardy and Dave Laing, Etting, ?by turns peppy, fragile, and gallant ? evinced the contradictory spirits of America in the Depression: sometimes beaten down, sometimes bearing up, whenever possible blithe.? All these characteristics are evident in her recording of Rodgers and Hart?s ?Ten Cents a Dance,? recorded only two weeks after Etting introduced the song on stage in the musical "Simple Simon."

Voices From the Days of Slavery, various speakers (2002)
In 2002, the American Folklife Center created the online presentation Voices From the Days of Slavery, gathering together 24 interviews with former African-American slaves conducted mostly between 1932 and 1941 and across nine Southern states as part of various field-recording projects. During this period, thousands of slave narratives were also collected on paper by WPA workers, but these are the only known audio recordings of former slaves. As historian C. Vann Woodward said of the WPA narratives, these recordings ?represent the voices of the normally voiceless? but with all the nuances of expression that written transcriptions cannot reproduce. They recall aspects of slave life and culture, including family relations, work routines, songs, dances and tales as well as the harsh realities of slavery, including punishments and auctions. They recount experiences of the Civil War, Emancipation and Reconstruction. One interviewee worked for Confederate President Jefferson Davis, as did his father and grandfather. These are fragments of history and reflect the technical and social limitations of the recording sessions. The voices of these ex-slaves, however, provide invaluable insight into their lives, communities and the world of slavery they left behind.

?I Want to Be a?Cowboy?s Sweetheart,? Patsy Montana (1935)
Montana?s signature song was written in 1934, when she was feeling lonely and missing her boyfriend. She recorded the tune a year later when Art Satherly of ARC Records needed one more song for a recording session with The Prairie Ramblers, a group that successfully melded jazz and string-band music. The lively, quick-polka tempo and yodeling refrain, coupled with Montana?s exuberant delivery, resulted in it being requested at virtually every performance, and the song became one of the first hits by a female country-and-western singer. Montana?s film appearance in Gene Autry?s "Colorado Sunset" in 1939 introduced her to a wider audience, and her independent, high-spirited personality and style quickly secured her popularity as a singing cowgirl. Montana was named to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1996.

?Fascinating Rhythm,? Sol Hoopii and his Novelty Five (1938)
In the 1890s, Hawaiian musicians began playing open-tuned guitars flat in their laps, fretting the strings with steel to produce distinctive sliding tones. The style soon reached the U.S. mainland, and when young Hoopii arrived in California in 1924, the Hawaiian steel guitar was a mature and demanding instrument with national popularity. Hoopii emerged as its greatest exponent, applying it to traditional hulas, ragtime, jazz and pop. He and his peers influenced blues and country slide guitarists, and Dobros and pedal steel guitars are descended from the Hawaiian model. Hoopii switched to electric guitar in the 1930s, and on ?Fascinating Rhythm,? he displays formidable technique, deftly mixing a chord solo and bass runs into a swinging improvisation on the Gershwin standard, departing far from the main melody, with beautiful tonal variations throughout.

The Indians for Indians Hour (March 25, 1947)
Originated by Don Whistler (aka Chief Kesh-ke-kosh), "The Indians for Indians Hour" was a radio show aired on WNAD at the University of Oklahoma in Norman from 1941 until 1988. It was a weekly venue for Native American music and cultural exchange featuring guests and music from 18 tribes reached by the station?s signal, including Apaches, Arapahos, Caddos, Cheyennes, Choctaws, Comanches, Kaws, Kiowas, Osages, Otos, Pawnees, Poncas, Seminoles, Shawnees and Wichitas. Whistler allowed only Indian music and had no non-Indian guests unless they worked for Indian Services. This program, one of 320 known to survive, includes news of a recent powwow and songs praising Indian war veterans sung by a group of Kiowa war mothers. Though the program was sometimes criticized for primarily highlighting music and entertainment instead of issues, it nevertheless served as an important tool for generational sharing and the popularization and preservation of Native American culture. In 1946, the show reached an estimated weekly audience of more than 75,000, nearly all of Native American origin. Whistler hosted the show until his death in 1951. Later hosts included Allen Quetone, Mose Poolaw, Clyde Warrior and Boyce Timmons.

?Artistry in Rhythm,? Stan Kenton and his Orchestra (1943)
That Kenton led a jazz orchestra, not a dance band, is obvious from the first notes of ?Artistry in Rhythm.? Though he composed the song in 1941, Kenton was unable to record it until 1943 because of the recording ban imposed by the American Federation of Musicians over royalty payments. The music stood out then, and its freshness remains obvious today. This was no smooth, melodic song intended for swaying couples in the big-band ballrooms. Arranged as well as composed by Kenton, ?Artistry in Rhythm? exhibits traits that are typical of his work -- an aggressive sound, innovative for the layering of one section of the orchestra playing over another, then another layer over both. As one reviewer observed, Kenton?s music ?was always controversial, but never sleepy.?

Leonard Bernstein?s debut with the New York Philharmonic (Nov. 14, 1943)
A little-known assistant conductor of the Philharmonic-Symphony Orchestra of New York, Bernstein, then 25, made his conducting debut with the ensemble as a last-minute substitute in unenviable circumstances. Guest conductor Bruno Walter was sick, regular conductor Artur Rodzi?ski was hundreds of miles away, and the concert was to be broadcast live across the country by CBS Radio. Bernstein met briefly with Walter but had no time to rehearse. Concertgoers and radio listeners were moved deeply as Bernstein led the orchestra through the program. After the second piece, he was brought back to the podium four times and excitement continued to grow. In Boston, Bernstein?s mentor Serge Koussevitzky dictated a telegram: ?Listening now. Wonderful.? Bernstein?s triumph made the front page of the next day?s New York Times and was reported across the country.

International Sweethearts of Rhythm: Hottest Women?s Band of the 1940s (1944-46)
The International Sweethearts of Rhythm was an interracial all?women jazz band formed in the late 1930s at the Piney Woods Country Life School, a boarding school for African-American children in Mississippi. The band made few commercial recordings but toured extensively in the 1940s, performing in Europe as well as at predominantly African-American theaters. The band also was showcased in several motion pictures. Professional musicians who joined the band include vocalist Anna Mae Winburn, Viola Burnside on tenor saxophone and Ernestine ?Tiny? Davis on trumpet. "The International Sweethearts of Rhythm" album, released in 1984 by Rosetta Records ? a record label dedicated exclusively to reissuing performances by female jazz and blues artists ? includes commercially recorded tracks by the band and excerpts from an appearance on the Armed Forces Radio Service program Jubilee.

?Hula Medley,? Gabby Pahinui (1947)
Pahinui was a master of slack-key guitar, a style originating in Hawaii. In slack key, one or more of a guitar?s strings are loosened or ?slacked? from the standard EADGBE format to create a different tuning, usually a chord that allows it to be played without using the fretboard. Often the thumb plays rhythm on the lower strings while the fingers play the melody on the higher strings. Pahinui made some of the first modern recordings in this genre, including the lovely instrumental ?Hula Medley? in 1947.

"I Can Hear It Now," Fred W. Friendly and Edward R. Murrow (1948)
"I Can Hear It Now" was an unlikely hit ? a collection of speech excerpts and news reports from 1933 to 1945 featuring an array of speakers from Will Rogers to Adolph Hitler. Columbia Records gambled on radio producer Friendly?s idea when a musicians? strike limited the recording of new music. Friendly, later president of CBS News, spent months locating and copying 100 hours of broadcast disc recordings using newly introduced magnetic recording tape to create compelling montages. CBS Radio?s Murrow added star power as narrator and co-writer. "I Can Hear It Now" found Americans eager to relive their own history and sold briskly on 78-rpm discs and in Columbia?s new LP format. The ease of editing and recording on magnetic tape allowed the creation of portions of the album that are now controversial, such as the fabrication of a break-in announcement of the Pearl Harbor attack and the rerecording of a newscast to replace a damaged original. However, the recording was widely imitated, and Friendly and Murrow produced two sequels as well as radio and television spinoffs.

?Let?s Go Out to the Programs,? The Dixie Hummingbirds (1953)
At the time of its release, this was considered to be a novelty, but ?Let?s Go Out to the Programs? now stands as a celebration of a golden age of African-American gospel music. In the ?50s, high-energy quartets and quintets like the Hummingbirds played multi-artist shows known as ?programs,? where several top gospel acts pushed one another to the limit. Led by the legendary Ira Tucker, the Hummingbirds recreate such a program in less than three minutes with striking, good-natured imitations of four gospel groups: The Soul Stirrers (with their young lead singer, Sam Cooke), The Blind Boys of Mississippi, The Pilgrim Travelers and The Bells of Joy. The Dixie Hummingbirds continue to perform today, led by Ira Tucker Jr. Younger singers carry on the legacy of The Soul Stirrers, while original members of The Bells of Joy still sing in their home of Austin.

?Also Sprach Zarathustra,? Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (1954, 1958)
Richard Strauss? ?Also Sprach Zarathustra? was recorded several times during the 78?rpm era but had to wait for magnetic tape, superior microphones and advances in disc mastering for its extremely wide dynamics to be fully captured as recorded sound. The dawn of high-fidelity recording happily coincided with the beginning of the Fritz Reiner era at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, when the ensemble was hailed by Igor Stravinsky as ?the most precise and flexible orchestra in the world.? One of Reiner?s first recordings with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, ?Zarathustra,? was taped simultaneously in mono and stereo by two RCA Victor teams, though only the mono version was initially issued. The album?s 1958 release in RCA?s Living Stereo line a few years later showed just how great the recording and performance were, with the perspective and balance Reiner drew from the orchestra fully revealed.

?Bo Diddley? and ?I?m a Man,? Bo Diddley (1955)
Born Elias Otha Bates in Mississippi in 1928, Diddley acquired his stage name after moving to Chicago as a child. He played guitar locally with a small group, drawing inspiration from the polyrhythmic song and music emanating from storefront churches, a pulsing blend that he distilled into the song ?Bo Diddley,? the A-side of his first single. Drummer Clifton James played the defining beat, and Diddley?s guitar and Jerome Greene?s maracas added further rhythmic layers beneath the chanted couplets. Having introduced himself, he threw down the gauntlet on the B-side, ?I?m a Man,? a throbbing slow blues song that, as simple as it seems, took nearly 30 takes to get down just right. It was also a major hit and inspired Muddy Waters? ?Manish Boy.?

?Green Onions,? Booker T. & the MG?s (1962)
Booker T. & the MG?s were a rarity when they were formed in the early 1960s -- a racially integrated R&B group. Formed as a house band for Stax Records, Booker T. & the MG?s were playing around in the studio in early 1962 when they came up with two catchy instrumentals. ?Green Onions? was originally intended as the B-side to ?Behave Yourself? but was quickly reissued as the A-side, then later as the title cut to their first LP. Anchored by the rhythm section of drummer Al Jackson Jr. and bassist Lewie Steinberg, ?Green Onions? is propelled by Booker T. Jones? driving organ and Steve Cropper?s stinging guitar.

"Forever Changes," Love (1967)
Love was an integrated psychedelic band from Los Angeles that played an aggressively original mix of rock, folk and blues, but the band was falling apart as its members prepared for their third album, "Forever Changes." Leader Arthur Lee was alarmed and pessimistic about the state of the world and convinced his own demise was imminent, though he lived until 2006. His new songs were filled with unexpected shifts and rife with foreboding, though his message was ultimately about resolution and self-reliance in the face of uncertainty and impermanence. Two compositions by second guitarist Bryan MacLean somewhat augmented Lee?s musings but were no less striking and unusual. Rock was growing more electric by the day in 1967, but "Forever Changes" is essentially acoustic, with a restrained and supple rhythm section supporting the ambitious horn and string charts of pop arranger David Angel, making Johnny Echols? searing guitar solos all the more memorable. The fusion of psychedelic, mainstream and classical styles, now seen as a landmark, found few takers at the time. Love soon disintegrated, but "Forever Changes" continues to loom large.

?The Continental Harmony: Music of William Billings,? Gregg Smith Singers (1969)
Composer Billings published six collections of his choral music between 1770 and 1794. His ?New England Psalm Singer? (1770) was the first tune book devoted entirely to the compositions of a single American composer. Billings was largely self-taught, yet his a cappella choral writing, featuring the melody in the tenor, created an indigenous sacred music that expanded the musical language of America. While Billings was well known in his lifetime ? his song ?Chester? was nearly as popular as ?Yankee Doodle? during the American Revolution ? his work was largely forgotten for more than a century. Despite his having composed more than 340 works, little of Billings? music was included in mainstream American sacred choral music collections after 1820. His musical style and some of his pieces, however, were kept alive within America?s Southern shape-note singing tradition. Following World War II, a generation of scholars and performers rediscovered his fresh and vigorous music. This recording by The Gregg Smith Singers, a 16-member choral ensemble dedicated to the performance of American music, helped reintroduce Billings? music to the world.

"A Charlie Brown Christmas," Vince Guaraldi Trio (1970)
The television soundtrack album, which introduced jazz to millions of listeners, includes expanded themes from the animated Peanuts special of the same name as well as jazz versions of both traditional and popular Christmas music, performed primarily by the Vince Guaraldi Trio. The original music is credited to pianist Guaraldi and television producer Lee Mendelson. Best remembered is the ?Linus and Lucy? theme, originally composed by Guaraldi for an earlier Peanuts project. It remains beloved by fans of the popular TV specials, those devoted to the newspaper comic strip and music lovers alike.

?Coat of Many Colors,? Dolly Parton (1971)
Parton?s autobiographical song affectionately recounts an impoverished childhood in the hills of Tennessee that was made rich by the love of her family. The song was instrumental in establishing Parton?s credibility as a songwriter. Her voice uplifts the tune with emotion and tender remembrances of her close-knit musical family. Parton has called ?Coat of Many Colors? the favorite of her compositions because of the attitude and philosophy it reflects.

"Mothership Connection," Parliament (1975)
?Ain?t nothin? but a party, y?all? intones George Clinton on the title track of this lively and unbelievably rhythmic funk album. While this undeniably is a party record, it also is rooted in the deepest currents of African-American musical culture and history. For example, the words ?Swing down, sweet chariot/Stop, and let me ride? are an unmistakable reference to the influential spiritual recorded by the Fisk Jubilee Singers. Mothership Connection was released in late 1975 shortly after the arrival to Parliament of saxophonist Maceo Parker and trombonist and arranger extraordinaire Fred Wesley. Like Parker and Wesley, bass player Bootsy Collins, dubbed by one critic a ?bass deity,? had played with funk pioneer James Brown. Add to such assembled talent the classically trained Bernie Worrell, whose synthesizer conjures galaxies of cosmic sound but whose piano, as heard on the track ?P-Funk,? evokes the ethereal chords of jazz pianist McCoy Tyner. DJ, conductor, arranger and wild lyricist Clinton oversees the whole, providing an amazing range of space characters (Lollipop Man, Star Child) outlandish vocabulary (?supergroovalistic,? ?prosifunkstication?) and all-around funkiness. The album has had an enormous influence on jazz, rock and dance music.

Barton Hall Concert by The Grateful Dead (May 8, 1977)
The rock band was known for its eclectic style that drew on many genres of popular and vernacular music, an improvisational foundation, and a commitment to touring and ?live? performances. The Grateful Dead was one of the few musical groups to not only allow but encourage fans to record its concerts, offering tickets to a special ?tapers? section at its shows. The organized trading of Dead tapes goes back at least to 1971 with the formation of the First Free Underground Grateful Dead Tape Exchange. Fans of the Dead will never completely agree about which one of their more than 2,300 concerts was the best, but there is some consensus about the tape of this Barton Hall performance at Cornell University. The soundboard recording of this show has achieved almost mythic status among Deadhead tape traders because of its excellent sound quality and early accessibility, as well as its musical performances.

?I Feel Love,? Donna Summer (1977)
Brian Eno famously declared after hearing this single that the track would ?change the sound of club music for the next 15 years.? Summer wrote ?I Feel Love? in collaboration with producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Belotte, who felt the song was supposed to represent the music of the future and should be entirely electronic. Consequently, they hired Robbie Wedel, who brought four cases of Moog synthesizers to the session. Those produced nearly all the sounds on the record, including synthesized bass drums and cymbals. Particularly notable was the bass line that Belotte has described as ?a giant?s hammer on a wall.? When the thunderous sound was combined with Summer?s breathy and ethereal vocal, the cut -- as Eno predicted -- took the clubs by storm. Partly through the involvement of Patrick Cowley, who made a 15-minute remix along with an eight-minute one, the song won particular popularity in gay dance clubs and soon achieved the status of an anthem in the LGBT community.

?Rapper?s Delight,? The Sugarhill Gang (1979)
This infectious dance number might be said to have launched an entire genre. Although spoken word had been a component of recorded American popular music for decades, this trio?s rhythmic rhyming inspired many future MCs and rap artists. The album version of ?Rapper?s Delight? is an epic 14 ?-minute salvo of irreverent stories and creative wordplay. The song dates from hip-hop?s infancy. As such, it does not address subject matter that has given rap music both positive and negative notoriety, but the song?s inventive rhymes, complex counter-rhythms and brash boastfulness presage the tenets of hip-hop. ?Rapper?s Delight? also reflects an early instance of music sampling and a legal settlement; it draws its bass line and other features from Chic?s 1979 hit ?Good Times.? As a result, songwriting credits for ?Rapper?s Delight? include that song?s composers, Chic guitarist Nile Rodgers and bassist Bernard Edwards, as well as Sylvia Robinson and The Sugarhill Gang (Michael Wright, Guy O?Brien and Henry Jackson).

"Purple Rain," Prince and the Revolution (1984)
Prince was already a hitmaker and critically acclaimed artist when his sixth album, the soundtrack for his 1984 movie debut, launched him into superstardom. Earlier, he had played all the instruments on his records to get the sounds he wanted, but now he led an integrated band of men and women who could realize the dense, ambitious fusion that he sought, blending funk, synth-pop and soul with guitar-based rock and a lyrical sensibility that mixed the psychedelic and the sensual. Prince experimented throughout the album, dropping the bass line from ?When Doves Cry? to fashion a one-of-a-kind sound and mixing analog and electronic percussion frequently. Portions of "Purple Rain" were recorded live at the First Avenue Club in Prince?s hometown of Minneapolis, and the success of the album served notice that the Twin Cities were a major center for pop music as numerous rock and R&B artists from the region emerged in its wake. Like much of Prince?s other work, "Purple Rain" was provocative and controversial, and some of its most explicit lyrics led directly to the founding of the Parents Music Resource Center.
